“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. The People with Hearing Impaired Network (PHIN-Deaf) is a Voluntary, Non-Profit, Disabled Peoples Organization that is running a Residential School for Hearing Impaired children in Hyderabad, Telangana. PHIN was initiated by Mrs. V. Janaki in 2007. Although she was born hearing and speech impaired and into one of the most backward families in Telangana, her passion to serve the community from childhood made her a strong woman Activist. She has experienced the unlawful violations of the rights of the hearing impaired. After gaining vast experience advocating these issues at a grass-roots level, she has expanded PHIN's activities to Pune, Maharashtra, setting up an office there.PHIN has been addressing the rehabilitation and livelihoods of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) from the rights perspective. Advocacy, Networking and Rehabilitation are its thrust areas. With support from both government and non-government agencies, PHIN has been able to highlight issues of the Hearing Impaired at national and international levels.PHIN has been involved in the formation of self-help groups, training the Hearing Impaired in Sign Language, legal advocacy on behalf of the Hearing Impaired, disseminating IEC material on issues of the Hearing Impaired, fixing marriage alliances, resolving cases of marital disputes and domestic violence between Hearing Impaired persons, linking Hearing Impaired children to educational institutions, and providing employment linkages to the Hearing Impaired.

Children with Hearing Impairments have no access to education, and even when they go to regular schools they are not able to learn anything. There is a dire need of a larger number of institutions that work for the betterment of HI people. Teachers should be trained in sign language, and more opportunities should be provided in employment to the Hearing impaired, especially for Hearing Impaired women.The proposed project will address these issues as well providing quality education to the Drop out children, proceeding to mainstream them in local schools when ready (~ 50 Children/yr). The school will be a model in the state and through the Community mobilization, parent training, and information material, the Hearing impaired and their parents will have access to the information on service providers and government programs available to them. Our campaigns are intended to build pressure to train teachers in Sign Language. 
 PHIN advocates the rights of persons with disabilities (in line with UNCRPD, PWDs Act, and RTE) with the support of various organizations and rights-based activists, rehabilitating people with hearing impairments by mainstreaming them in the local schools, orienting the parents, and linking thousands of hearing impaired people to government entitlements and service providers. In addition, PHIN is improving awareness on legal issues through counseling, a large number of domestic violence issues have been solved and cases filed with the Human Rights Commission and District Legal services AuthoritiesWe provide training for jobs in Cosmetology (job of a beautician), tailoring/embroidery, handicrafts, communications, and computers, and placing trained people in various companies to make their lives more meaningful. 
 A special school for the deaf has the following advantages: It provides a venue for free communication and social interactions between deaf persons. It is a “home away from home” for deaf children and provides a comfort zone. It inculcates a sense of identity. It provides role models for deaf children. It provides the opportunity to participate in sports and other activities among peers.Although mainstreamed schooling has its benefits, such as broadened experiences for all children and the development of a more inclusive attitude, as long as educators are not able to communicate effectively in sign language, it will be impossible for a deaf or hard-of-hearing child to learn to the best of his/her ability.
