For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. District Gajapati, Odisha has tribal population as high as 56%. Gajapati has (2nd highest) 75% incidence of poverty.  Tribals in high numbers from Gajapati district migrate to neighbouring states in search of livelihood. Tribal migrant workers had to return home after the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic due to lack of employment.The secondary impacts of COVID-19 crisis are also aggravating the challenges faced by many tribal families, especially in terms of access to affordable and nutritious food. The lock down has affected collection, use and sale of minor forest produces (MFP). As per government’s own data, an estimated 100 million forest dwellers depend on MFP for food, shelter, medicines and cash income. The MFP collection season from April to July provides major income support to tribals (almost 60% of annual collection during this period). Most unfortunately, it coincides exactly with the lockdown impacting the communities till now, which will have a drastic and long term impact on their livelihood and survival.  With less resources, no access to social protection or safety nets, they incapacity to cope with the loss of incomes put them at high of in depth poverty. Children and women are most vulnerable and in most difficult condition. 
 The humanitarian emergency situation calls for reaching out to the neglected and poor tribal families to some extent till they have some manageable income at their hand for the families to subsist. Provide long-term livelihood and employment support keeping in mind these may be needed for at least 6-9 months or even more until the broader national economy begins to recover.With loss of livelihood, with no hope for a renewable in near future tribal families need urgent support. One model can be constructed with extending support for backyard vegetable cultivation and poultry. It can ensure impact within six months of the start of the event. PREM proposes to distribute chicks for rearing and vegetable seeds to a total amount of Rs.2,000 (Rupees two thousand only) for immediate livelihood regeneration to the needy. Depending on the funds that we receive, we hope to take up very badly affected families for distribution of the items in the village.In this context PREM recommends to address the issue of poverty through increasing the agriculture productivity with low input costs and proper management of income generation activities. This would boost the rural economy and decline the prevalence of malnutrition among children and women.  
 With timely financial aid of Rs.2,000 from Give India Foundation to each HH and handholding support of the community organizers, the women can grow vegetables in the backyard and utilize for family consumption &amp; the surplus for sale as a result the women can get a minimum of Rs.1000 a month from the 3rd month onwardsSimilarly, women raise backyard poultry and from the sale of surplus, they will be able to earn a minimum of Rs.500 from the 3rd month onwards PREM will also facilitate income generation through horticulture, agriculture activities &amp; MGNREGA in convergence with govt departmentsAs a whole, the 500 women and their families will have sustainable income of at least Rs.2,000 a month through vegetable cultivation and backyard poultry rearing units by the end of the 6th month of the initiation of the Project. One can notice the success as below:<ul><li>Nutrition for healthy living of 500 children and adolescents</li><li>Enhanced income under MGNREGA @ Rs.1000/- pm per HH</li><li>Reduced or zero distressed migration</li><li>Improved health &amp; livelihood</li><li>The people are bankrupt and without any work to meet family needs now but their livelihood situation will improve after the project. The impact would be documented and shared with Give India Foundation.</li></ul>

Gajapati Tribal Livelihood Regeneration

Tribals mostly depend upon the agricultural sector for sustaining their living conditions. They are amongest the most vulnerable in terms of food and nutrition security as seen in national statistics. In addition to farm based activities, the collection and sale of non-timber forest produce like kendu leaves and mahua flowers by tribal communities in Odisha has been badly affected by the lockdown, with no collection agents coming and markets closed. Modernisation has led to the disappearance of people-based practices such as agro-forestry and food gathering. This has specifically and adversely affected the lives of women, increasing manifold their daily drudgery. Involvement of women in all the development programmes right from the stage of project planning is essential. Active participation of women in development programmes will help to identify their problems and reduce their drudgery.In order to generate productivity, it is vital for them to possess efficient skills and knowledge. Increase in productivity and profitability can be achieved through, blending practical knowledge with scientific technologies, efficient use of natural resources, implementing time specific management practices, giving importance to technology-driven production, adopting appropriate farming systems, adoption of location-specific technology, market demand driven production and implementing low cost and no cost technologies.

 Grihini aims at creating opportunities for beneficiaries’ sustainable annual income up to Rs 60,000 per family through multiple resources.
