But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. On probe, to her utter shock and despair, she discovered she could not afford sanitary napkins and resorted to 'scrap' pieces of unhygienic cloth during menstruation. Deeply touched, she researched menstrual hygiene and realized our country's sorry situation. An alarmingly vast population of young adolescent girls and women, especially in rural areas, lack adequate knowledge about menstrual hygiene. Many lack the affordability and accessibility of safe menstrual products. Prevalent societal taboos and stigma severely curtail their lives, opportunities, and choices. A significantly large number use materials like cow dung, dry leaves, sand, and pieces of dirty rugs due to unavailability and financial constraints to obtain sanitary napkins. She approached her father and sought his help to start Pinkishe Foundation with her. This small flame lit by a 16-year-old burnt arduously and led to what today is a strong growing community of over 2 Lakh women, pledged towards the common cause of betterment of women and the girl child through inclusive growth, economic independence, and ensuring health &amp; dignity. The pillars of Pinkishe are the women who run the Foundation. Pinkishe is an ever-growing sorority of ordinary women joining hands every day. Women come here from all walks of life, cutting across all socio-economic strata, religions, and beliefs, and becoming confident and proud members of Pinkishe. The main challenges were lack of reach and hands, complete inexperience in the development sector, and zero funds. We decided to use social media to activate volunteers. Within six months of inception, we created a closed all-women community of over 2 lakh women, one of the largest of its kind in the world, who came cutting all boundaries of race, geographical location, caste, religion, and financial and educational background. We shared with them our objective of working towards normalizing menstruation. An overwhelming response followed, which resulted in 50+ branches getting operational overnight across the length of breadth of the country. Our volunteers started conducting camps to collect sanitary pads packets as donations from the people around their residences through door-to-door collection, social media campaigns, and organization field donation drives where they would set up a pad collection camp in public places like markets, schools, offices, public parks to take pads donations. The pads so collected were then distributed free of cost to needy areas like slums, villages &amp; rural schools. The distribution was always accompanied by providing free menstrual literacy sessions. And thus, PadBank® was established, whose branches were run by a vast force of volunteer women from their homes. Help put a Stop to Period Shame!  Keep underprivileged girls in school past their first period.

Menstrual hygiene is a massive problem in India. Unfortunately, menstruation is a subject that still largely remains taboo. It is not a subject that is openly discussed. Hence, the scale of the problem and its devastating impacts are less known. Lack of knowledge about menstruation and hygiene coupled with a large population in the low per capita income group ends up shocking statistics in India. More than 11 crores of adolescent girls are vulnerable to poor menstrual hygiene.According to official studies, 70% of girls use old unhygienic clothes as absorbents during their periods, whereas 44% reported embarrassment and humiliation over restrictions, 60% of girls miss school because of menstruation, and 23% leave school on reaching puberty.Circumstances force many girls to use materials like mud, cow dung and natural leaves when they menstruate. These unhygienic materials put women at risk of reproductive tract infections leading to deadly diseases like cervical cancer. Constant ignorance of this natural phenomenon has been harming the health &amp; dignity of women for a long.The efforts of the government and a few individuals alone will not suffice. It requires a contribution by the whole civil society. Under our program PadBank, members of Pinkishe run PadBank branches across the nation from their homes and other places and our volunteers distribute sanitary pads free to needy girls while enhancing their awareness levels on the subject of menstrual hygiene.​We started our activities in the year 2017. Our volunteers across 50+ branches across India ran awareness campaigns and started collecting pad donations. The collected pads are then distributed to needy girls in rural areas and slums. In the process, awareness sessions are conducted by qualified doctors and our volunteers to enhance their knowledge about the importance of menstrual hygiene, usage of sanitary absorbents, correct method of usage and disposal and so on.In due course of time, we started researching and have begun manufacturing reusable cloth pads of our own. These are high-quality pads. These pads use a special fabric that lets air flow through it but stops liquid; making them leakproof yet comfortable while using. The pads are designed in special shape and size in a way that when unfolded, they look like a regular cloth so that girls do not feel shy about drying them in the open. To support 100000 girls living in 50 villages get sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene education for a period of 12 months.

Despite our best efforts, poverty and lack of access to basic necessities remain persistent problems. Many people still lack access to basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, and medicine. Our concern is that without adequate support, these vulnerable populations will continue to face significant challenges in meeting their basic needs. Punya Kalash is a project aimed at supporting marginalized, underprivileged &amp; disaster-hit communities. 
 To address this issue, we have established the Punya Kalash project, which aims to provide direct support to those in need. We will be working with our volunteers, other local organizations, authorities and donors to provide food, clothing, shelter, medicine, equipment, financial support and care to people who are struggling to make ends meet. Additionally, we will also be providing job training and employment opportunities to help people become self-sufficient. Our goal is to provide a helping hand and possibly create sustainable solutions that will empower communities and help break the cycle of poverty.

We aim to provide not only immediate assistance but also long-term support to help people regain their independence and stability. Did you know that 1 in 5 girls are forced to discontinue their education as soon as they get their first menstrual period? And 71% of Indian girls are unaware of menstruation till they get their first period! Little girls who have not been pre-educated about what to expect to go through shock, trauma, and embarrassment when they start their first period. It is also imperative that a girl know what she needs to do when she starts menstruating.  She needs to know about the various menstrual absorbent options available to her, their correct usage, and how she must maintain hygiene and take care of herself.Parents or guardians must be prepared to handhold their daughter when she gets her first period. Awareness of normal versus abnormal menstrual patterns helps early detection of potentially serious health issues. We need your support to educate the educators and help keep girls in school past their first period. 
 SAKHI is a sustainable project in which we support schools from rural, rurban (rural-urban) and urban geographies to ensure every girl has the requisite knowledge about menstruation and the support that is readily available when needed.The Sakhi project is targeted at adding a large number of schoolteachers from across the national landscape to the Pinkishe Community by supporting them to become Certified Menstrual Educators (CMEs). CMEs train and support schoolgirls to ensure timely intervention and the smooth transition of every girl child - in preparation and when she takes the “first steps” to womanhood, i.e., the onset of “menarche” the first period. With your support, we can: Train school teachers Develop Sakhi mobile appDevelop &amp; distribute educative resources               Create &amp; nurture certified menstrual educators’ communityCreate awareness amongst family support And most of all… an educated girlWhy Schools?Schools are those safe spaces and temples of learning where young girls take their ‘first step’ to womanhood, i.e., the onset of menarche. There is growing momentum worldwide to address menstruation-related challenges adolescent girls face, especially in schools. It is now widely believed that schools should play a more proactive part in ensuring that girls are better prepared for menarche.
