“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Pocketful of Sunshine (PFO Sunshine) is a child rights organization that works to prevent child abuse, ensure a safe, healthy &amp; happy childhood for children at risk and economic empowerment of women.PFO Sunshine’s organizing concept is drawn from its founding members’ long experience of working within the child protection system and belief in early childhood interventions. It offers a much-needed humanitarian solution to the intertwined and complex occurrence of neglect and poverty faced by children from economically weaker sections of society.Violence against children is widespread in India. It’s prevalent in all socio-economic groups of urban and rural sectors alike. Children irrespective of their gender, be they boys, girls, or transgender suffer overwhelming levels of violence, though the form of abuse may be different in each case. Within our contemporary urban life, children face various levels of risk due to different combinations of micro and macro-level socio-economic structures. These include reduced availability of family caregivers, lack of social networks, the patriarchal nature of society, growing economic and social disparities, harmful messaging through social media, and early exposure to narcotics. Children of daily wage, domestic, and other informal workers are one of the most vulnerable groups in Indian cities. Often coming from migrant families that lack extended kinship networks within urban areas, these kids grow up with little supervision from parents, who are often themselves victims of exploitative labor conditions. These kids are easy targets for almost all kinds of abuse. The chances of them falling into undesired activities are also higher.Daycare is a growing necessity for children and working mothers in urban areas. Although a large number of the urban workforce, especially women, are engaged in employment activities outside of their homes, childcare arrangements remain insufficient and extremely expensive. The need for low-cost childcare arrangements for children of daily wage earners and migrant workers is more urgent than ever. Alternative care for children is an essential component of building a society where the economic empowerment of all women is prioritized.Realizing the need to break this cycle of neglect and abuse, PFO Sunshine has undertaken the task of growing a network of daycare centers in New Delhi that provide alternative care, nutrition, and supplemental education for the children of daily wage workers. At present the organization is running three daycare centers in different parts of Southeast Delhi. These daycare centers provide an opportunity for these children to grow and for their mothers to work longer hours without worrying about the well-being and safety of their children.Key Features of Sunshine DaycareThe daycares are operational from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and managed by a team of well-trained staff. They cater to children from 3 months to 12 years. •  The Daycare Centers are run near basti•  The young babies are dropped and picked by mothers as per their need•  Children are enrolled in Anganwadi and government schools as per their age•  They join daycare after school hours•  Freshly cooked food, is served•  The daily routine includes workouts with music, games, regular activities, study, and rest•  Every daycare has a small library to inculcate reading habits•  Children are taught about how to keep themselves safe•  Parents are assisted in getting the essential documents like Aadhar cards made•  Parents meetings are conducted periodically to discuss issues about child safety and wellbeingThe District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) Southeast Delhi has identified some vulnerable areas based on Vulnerability Mapping data. it has suggested Sunshine to start Daycare centers in these areas to prevent children from abuse and live a safe and happy life. Pocketful of Sunshine is willing to establish Daycares in five of these areas.The organization requires funds To sustain the existing work and establish five new daycares in vulnerable areas in South East Delhi, advised by the DCPU.
