For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Founded in the year 2000, the PPES journey started with just 31 girls in the first batch at the school in Anupshahr district Bulandshahr. Due to the age-old patriarchal society and the mindset of the community towards the girl child, girls were not sent to school. With years of consistent efforts, PPES is now working with more than 3000+ girls and approximately 10,400 women.With the ultimate aim of ensuring financial independence for these girls and women, PPES also ensures that they are equal and contributing members of their families and communities.

Pardada Pardadi Education Society plans yearly trips for its students to provide them with exposure to the cities and different cultures around India. One of the most memorable trips planned was in 2011 when 15 of our top students from grade 7-12 were taken on a two-day trip to Jim Corbett National Park.

Most of the girls are from rural villages and haven’t seen much of the world other than their neighbourhood villages. They stayed at a resort and participated in adventurous activities while exploring the animal kingdom.

The teachers also taught them the history of Corbett Falls and the ancient Garjia temple. History was never such fun! The trip helped them to engage with the outside world and to get a better insight to the history all around them. Every year the girls look forward to these exposure trip with enthusiasm and joy.

PPES girls explore the world

Without a bicycle, Radha, who is studying in grade 9, found it difficult to go to and from the Pardada Pardadi School. Dugrao where she lives, is located nine miles away from her school which would make anyone wonder whether or not it’s worth making such a journey on foot. Her family also struggled as her Dad travels 10-15 miles a day just to get to work to till farmland.

Now Rhada loves her commute to school with the bike the Pardada Pardadi Education Society gave to her. She said: “Now, I give rides on my bicycle to my friends and family. My father sits on the back of the bicycle too as I carefully pedal it. I know that I should bike safely; my school tells me that I should not bike too fast on the road.”

Our organisation runs four educational institutions where over 1,100 young girls in Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh receive free education and educational supplies. These girls belong to an underprivileged society and hardly get to explore the world outside of their towns.Every year this project organises regular day trips for these girls so they can experience the wider world and enjoy all its different cultures. 
 This project arranges regular day trips to popular cities such as Delhi and Agra. Teachers and caregivers accompany them while providing information on the cultural and social background of these cities. Students are also given meals and snacks throughout the day.These exposure trips are great fun and it acts as a perfect way for young girls to understand different societies and become more familiar with the world around them. 
 These trips cater to 50 underprivileged girls studying at our schools in Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh. Every donation of Rs. 1,000 will give a rural girl the chance to learn about the world around her.

Many of our students come from poor families living in far away villages. Most of them cannot afford to commute and are forced to walk for miles to attend our school. Walking such long distances not only takes up a lot of their time but is also very dangerous. 
 Sponsoring a bicycle for every girl, who lives too far away to walk to school, will ensure that they receive an education where they are provided with completely free resources. In addition, they won’t lose out on the Rs. 10 deposited into their bank accounts every day they attend school.Initially we sponsored bicycles for 100 girls that were living far away from the school. The project was such a success that we will now continue to provide bicycles to new students to make commuting simpler and safer. 
 A donation of Rs. 2,500 will go towards giving 50 underprivileged girls the facilities to pursue a decent education. A bicycle will make their journey much faster and, more importantly, safer.
