For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Palawi project under Prabha-Hira Pratishthan was established in 2001 at Pandharpur. It provides a Care Home for orphan children living with HIV. Palawi believes that all children have a fundamental rights to a loving, fun-filled childhood with access to health, education, and a safe and stigma free environment. Palawi has given a lifetime commitment to provide for their educational, nutritional, medical and recreational needs. We also aim at bringing awareness on HIV/AIDS and to sensitize the general population to the prevalence of HIV.Mrs Mangal Shah is the founder and trustee of Palawi. Its been 18 years now since inception of Palawi in 2001 when two girl child were found abandoned in a cow- shed. The deserted infants were HIV positive. Mrs Mangaltai began to provide her love, care and support to such children with open arms. The initial period of her work was no less than any struggle but her strength, hard work and commitment towards orphaned and abandoned HIV positive made Palawi a living example.Mangaltai believes that curbing the HIV epidemic necessitates broadening the scope of services beyond health, to encompass nutrition, psycho-social support, education, legal, livelihood and social protection. Currently, 126 children are living here happily.In this process of bringing in positive changes the lives of HIV positive children, Mangaltai’s daughter Dimple Ghadge, Rajkumar Ghadge (son in law) and her son Ashish Shah have given absolute support in running of the institution.And now Mangal Tai's grandchildren Tejas Dimple Ghadge is joined Palawi after completing Masters in social work.

Your support has truly made a remarkable difference, and we're thrilled to share some heartwarming insights from the visit. 🙌😊 Field Visit Date: 17/05/2023Field Visit by: Sai Saranya, Sr. Associate, Online Giving Delivery Team - Give Visit Summary:Our journey began at Palawi's office in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, where we met the dedicated program team. We then visited the children's hostels, where they reside in two separate buildings - one for girls and other for boys, looked after by caretakers and seniors. There is a separate dorm for infants who come to Palawi. Bunk beds accommodate up to 10 children per room, with common washroom facilities. A newly constructed building now serves as the kitchen and dining hall, addressing the previous space constraints caused by the growing number of children. This was made possible through the acquisition of new dining facilities and a commercial machine for kneading and preparing chapati, using funds raised through this campaign. Palawi also runs school for these children, offering an alternative to formal education, alleviating the stigma that once kept these children away from regular schooling. The school has amenities like computer lab, science lab, playroom for infants and toddlers, and a recreational space.
