"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. An estimated 21,600 girls are living in Delhi's slums alone who have no access to education. Feminine hygiene products are out of reach for nearly 200,000 adolescent girls. While all children in these communities face enormous barriers to escaping the cycle of poverty, girls are especially vulnerable. Without a primary education, financial independence is nearly impossible for women in India. Due to the dowry system and lack of opportunity, families often marry their girls off at a young age. All of this places them at risk of teenage pregnancy, trafficking and sexual abuse. Aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, the Foundation supports families to enrol their girls in schools and preschools, and after-school programs help ensure their success by providing tutors, college mentors, remedial tuition, and a safe, accessible environment for learning. Technology is central to our programming, and our centres are equipped with high 100 Mbps internet connectivity, educational software, video conferencing facilities, and film technology.Over the past 24 years, the PRAJNA Foundation has been creating pathways for women and girls to escape the cycle of poverty through education and vocational training. While we support all slum children, educating and empowering girls, has a powerful generational impact.This year, we hope to send 1,000 girls from Delhi's slums to school, supporting their long-term success by providing school supplies, remedial tuition, digital literacy, nutrition &amp; health supplements, and self-defence training. An investment in the well-being of a girl from Delhi's slums is an investment in all of India. Educating a girl allows her to dodge early marriage and motherhood. She will be more likely to support and empower all her children, and her daughters will also avoid the cycle of early marriage and pregnancy that traps generations in abject poverty. Although this project aims to send 1000 girls to school, this "girl effect" will spread education and opportunity exponentially in future generations.

Objective of the Project:Create livelihood for poor women who have either lost their jobs due to Covid-19 or not getting any suitable employment.CHALLENGE:Women living in urban slums are the worst affected due to Covid19 pandemic. They are facing multiple problems. Initial help from NGOs and the local governments is not sufficient and may not last too long. While their husbands have lost their jobs, they have also been unable to work as house-maids or domestic helps due to fear of spreading infections. Their jobs are not likely to return for a very long time. These women are uneducated and many of them are also single parent. This has compounded their problems and has made their life all the more difficult.The solution lies in up-skilling the women for alternate source of livelihood and get them suitably employed. Considering their learning ability and aptitude, they can easily pick up and complete the courses designed around Stitching &amp; Tailoring. The brilliant ones can also work on Fashion Maker and up-skill themselves for better opportunity in apparel industry. They would also have the option to start their own tailoring shops with financial assistance. 
 Project Description:<ul><li>Stitching &amp; Tailoring project will enhance vocational skills &amp; knowledge amongst women &amp; adolescent girls, who come from economically backward and weaker section of the society and are living in the nearby slums at Kalkaji, New Delhi.</li><li>3 months Certificate Course and 6 months Diploma Course will be conducted and the successful candidates will be given the appropriate course completion certificates after they clear the exams successfully.</li><li>Sewing machines and financial assistance will be provided to successful trainees as per availability of the finance.</li><li>The project will also strive to improve their entrepreneurship &amp; employment skills &amp; empower them taking decision about themselves &amp; make them self-reliant.</li><li>The project will assist and connect them with the prospective employers in the apparel industry for suitable employment in shops and factories.</li><li>This project will be implemented by PRAJNA FOUNDATION by a professional project team constituted for the implementation, management &amp; monitoring of the project.</li><li>The project aims to benefit 100 women and young girls every six months and help them to break the cycle of poverty.</li><li>The project team will continuously monitor the training program and submit periodic progress reports.</li></ul> 
 IMPACT: The trainees will get engaged in gainful employment. It will help them to come out of the poverty and make them self-reliant and self-confidant. The economically empowered girls and women will have cascading impact on the society. An economic independent young girl will also help her to escape pre-mature marriage and motherhood. She will be more likely to support and empower all her children, and her daughters will also escape the cycle of early marriage and pregnancy that traps generations in abject poverty.
