“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. That was the day I knew my mission in life was to get these children out of the hell-like conditions in red-light areas. In many parts of the developing world, children still lack access to books in their mother tongue, that they can easily read, understand, and learn from. The disruption of education systems due to COVID-19 has deepened inequities, creating a learning crisis impacting up to 99% of students in low and lower-middle income countries.The need for inclusive, open access to high-quality, multilingual storybooks and story-based learning resources for children is more urgent than ever. 
 As part of our efforts to bridge the learning gap that began in the pandemic, we are leveraging technology, our repository of multilingual open-licensed books, and our wonderful network to quickly pivot and create programmes and resources that can be used in resource-scarce environments.We have already begun to put together resources for students, including:<ul><li>Foundational Literacy Programme: 180 books across 6 reading levels for Grades 1-3</li><li>Reading Programme: Available in 6 languages to support reading development</li><li>Localised resources: Facilitated translation of 6,000 books in 130 language</li><li>Readalongs: 650+ AV books across 5 languages to aid language acquisition</li></ul>StoryWeaver has been working at scale with the CBSE to implement its Reading Mission, a 2-year initiative to promote reading literacy across 26,000 schools by encouraging children to actively engage with storybooks. It has also been working with UNICEF, MSCERT and Integrated Child Development Services to launch Goshticha Shaniwar, a statewide reading programme in Maharashtra which shared 300 books with 25 lakh children.Under the Padhe Bharat campaign, we partnered with the SCERT Punjab for a state-wide Reading Programme in English, Hindi and Punjabi to address both the importance of foundational learning as the basis for a child’s future education.

1 out of every 2 children cannot read at grade level in India, moreover, there are several schools across the country that simply do not have access to non-academic reading resources and the infrastructure to set up a library.There's also a severe lack of funds to start a library. We are striving to make books accessible to every child by raising money for 1000 libraries to reach the last mile child. Donate-a-Book is a crowdfunding platform set up by Pratham Books in 2015. The platform helps bridge those in need of books and those who want to help. The platform allows the beneficiary to get books at no cost, and have access to choose multilingual books and multi-level books. They also have the option to choose either books or Library-in-a-classroom kits* with the money raised.100% of the money raised goes to the beneficiaries in the form of our books. They have the liberty to choose the titles, reading levels, genres, and language of the books from our vast collection.*Library-in-a-classroom kit is developed for schools that are infrastructure and resource-scarce. Each kit has 90-120 books. They are portable and can be hung in the classroom, on a window sill, a hook, or such. They are customizable according to the reading levels and language preferences of the organization. To date, we have distributed over 25,00,000 books to over 27 states in India.
