"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. Many youth in India are struggling today to find jobs. In India, a substantial number of young individuals are currently grappling with the challenges of unemployment. Despite boasting the world's largest and youngest workforce, with an estimated influx of 250 million young people into the labour market over the next decade, the country faces a critical issue. Alarmingly, less than 5% of the Indian population possesses formal skills, and a staggering 81% of the workforce operates in the informal sector. This disheartening scenario paints a grim picture: industries are struggling to locate adequately skilled workers, while countless Indian youths are locked in a relentless quest for employment opportunities.The stark disparity between the aspirations and capabilities of these young individuals is evident. Bridging this chasm is imperative.Pratham reaches out to students who were forced to drop out of school due to various reasons such as financial barriers or family circumstances. Those who have completed their formal education up to grade 8 or 10 are the target group. Our objective is to facilitate quality and holistic education by spreading awareness, building self confidence and empowering youth with hands-on skills to enable attainment of livelihoods and a way out of poverty.Every year 30,000 students pursue training at one of our 140+ centres in one of the following trades: ●     Care Economy: Beauty, Apparel and Healthcare●     STEM Aligned: Electrical, Automotive, Welding and Construction●     Green Skills: Solar Panel Repair, Plumbing, Drywall and False Ceiling Repair●     ITeS: Multi-functional Office Assistant, Graphic Design, Automotive Showroom HostWe continue to support students, even after course completion, by ensuring they get job interviews. Around 85% of our students get job placement and their typical earnings is Rs. 9000 monthly. Since 2015, over 100,000 youth have been given access to jobs, another 3500 entrepreneurs have been mentored, and over 5000 workers have been upskilled. We realise that acquiring a job is only half the battle won. Therefore, post-placement tracking helps us ensure that students feel comfortable in their new positions. We provide migration support to relocated students and regularly check-in with all of our students via both follow-up calls and in-person visits. Apart from training for freshers, we also offer upskilling options for informal workers who are looking for formal certification, and mentorship support for entrepreneurs who are running micro-enterprises. Our various vocational training programmes reach out to more than 150,000 youth annually across 20,000 villages and 16 states in India.

The Annual Status of Education Report 2022, indicated that more than half of all children in Grade V could not read a Grade II level text or perform simple 2-digit subtraction. School closures due to the pandemic have worsened the situation. Pratham is trying to change this.We are an innovative learning organization working on improving the quality of education in India. Established in 1995 to provide education to children in the slums of Mumbai, we have grown in both scope and scale, with programs today reaching children and youth in 22 states in the country.In 2018, we began the Hamara Gaon (Our Village) program in West Bengal to strengthen basic literacy and numeracy skills of children, primarily using TaRL and other innovative teaching learning techniques. The program is active in 11 districts across the state.As one of the largest non-governmental organizations in the country, we focus on high-quality, low-cost and replicable interventions to address gaps in the education system. Working directly with children and youth as well as through large-scale collaborations with governments, Pratham programs reach millions of lives every year.
