“I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education.  Our Nurture Merit Programme provides financial assistance to disadvantaged but exceptional students from Bangalore for their college studies. We support them until they successfully graduate, subject to the student maintaining a merit every year. In addition to this, those selected are given books, coaching and training on communication and soft skills.

Students studying in government colleges even within 50 miles of Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India, are several information years (akin to light years) away in terms of career awareness and job opportunities. Providing them right information, skilling and nudging them towards their dreams will create a positive ripple effect. Referring to the state of Karnataka, the NSDC report says - “The State is likely to face a deficit of 10 to 14 lakh skilled persons” (https://www.nsdcindia.org/sites/default/files/files/karnataka-presentation-ppt.pdf page 21). What is even more alarming, as pointed in the same report, is while there will be a deficit of 14 lakh skilled people, there is expected to be a 12 lakh surplus of unskilled people in the coming time. Majority of these “unskilled” people come from rural sector. 
 PRERANA identifies meritorious students from underprivileged backgrounds, and provides them with financial assistance, educational support to help them complete their education and land a good job.There are two programs:1) Nurture Merit - This program is implemented in Bengaluru. Parents of the beneficiary kids are usually auto/cab drivers, daily wage workers, single parent, or health deprived Students who score more than 80% in their 10th grade are administered an entrance test, their house visited for verification and scholarship is disbursed to the deserving students. They are provided with coaching/mentoring support, personality development training, skill training to prepare them for a career.2) Rural e2e - PUC and Degree colleges in rural areas in districts surrounding Bengaluru are identified, students are selected based on their marks in 10th and our entrance test. We provide them with scholarship, books (both text books and general reading), conduct training and interactive sessions, computer training, and help them build their communication skills. 
 More than 2000 students have completed their education and most of them are working in organisations such as Infosys, Wipro, TCS, Capgemini, E&amp;Y, Toyota etc. There are few exceptional students who have achieved excellence such as a PhD in Astrophysics, doing an MS in Germany, etc.Rural e2e program is relatively new. About 20 students in the final year of their college are showing good progress in their overall personality. We have identified 7 rural colleges with about 500 students supported.
