“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. We are one of the pioneer organisations operating programmes for the rescue, protection, and rehabilitation of human trafficking victims. We also work towards preventing second generation trafficking of their children.Our work involves in-depth research and networking with several non-profit organisations (NPOs) to increase the impact across the country.We work with various state governments to frame anti-human trafficking schemes and policies to rescue and rehabilitate victims; helping with legal proceedings to restore their rights.The model for our Anti-Human Trafficking (AHT) campaign is recognised as one of the most successful strategies to address human trafficking. In addition, we have also worked alongside UNICEF in 2000 on successful initiatives against child trafficking.Furthermore, we are the first organisation to introduce and implement the professional Home Investigation Report System in order to tap re-trafficking in suspected areas. MB was an out-of-school girl living in slums when she was identified by Prerana workers and subsequently enrolled into our NCC in 1991. Tragically, four years later her mother died, after which Prerana was more than happy to take responsibility for her by admitting her into St. Catherine’s Home in 1997.

Unfortunately her aunt forcibly took her out of the residential learning centre and married her off to an old man three times her age. Understandably MB wasn’t happy with the arrangement and so ran away from her husband’s house.

After much persistence and getting an official order from the Child Welfare Committee, Prerana placed her at Chitanya Mahila Mandal in Pune in 2003. Today, she has completed her education and is doing a vocational training course to become self-reliant.

Escaping the shackles of forced marriage

Naunihaal is a rehabilitation centre run by Prerana providing shelter, love, and facilities to young girls rescued from human trafficking. Other than imparting education, various productive activities are organised so their personalities can develop and we provide a family-like environment.

This project provides girls with the chance to grow an organic garden economically. Residents are able to develop a lifelong skill and hobby growing many types of vegetables and herbs using organic farming materials and techniques. Moreover, this organic production will reduce the centre’s food expenses; provide fresh, nutritious and healthy meals to children; composting of kitchen waste, to create compost for maintenance of the garden; and to help residents understand the uses of waste.

One of our girls said: “I feel very happy when I am gardening. I speak to the plants because someone once told me that it was necessary to speak with them so they would grow much better. The best experience for me has been the time when I pulled out the vegetable marrows. They were so big and fresh. They tasted so good.”

Around 20-65 million people in India are victims of human trafficking in one form or another. Most trafficked girls fall prey to commercial sexual exploitation and are highly at risk of contracting the HIV infection. Abandoned by their families and communities, such girls experience violence and oppression for the rest of their lives. They don’t just need to be rescued but also helped with guidance and legal support for successful rehabilitation. 
 We run a rehabilitation programme where rescued girls are supported until they return to their families or rehabilitate those who don’t belong to a family. We help them recover from their physical as well as psychological wounds with a psychologist’s guidance, while assisting with legal aid. Furthermore, vocational training in simple skills is provided so that once they leave our centre they are able to be self-reliant. 
 Our programme involves continuous work with rescued victims per the situation and the cases reported. This project takes care of 400 of these victims rescued from different situations and brought to the rehabilitation centre.A small donation of Rs. 2,890 will help provide rehabilitation facilities to a rescued victim at our centre.

A survey suggests that every day around 25 new homeless children find their way to Mumbai from across the country. Often girls from here are seriously at risk of exploitation.Our centre in Maharashtra takes care of homeless girls from disadvantaged backgrounds who are vulnerable to human trafficking for sexual exploitation or child labour. 
 We provide safe shelter and care to homeless and rescued girls at our centre, ‘Naunihaal’. In addition to a supportive loving environment, the Naunihal home provides girls with educational programmes, medical check-ups, and additional recreational activities.We also encourage children living here to grow their own vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs in the shelter’s garden using pots, sheds, and bio-waste. In addition to giving them an enjoyable pastime, it also acts as a sustained source of food for their daily meals. 
 This project will help girls at our centre continue with a productive activity like gardening. Often these children come with a tragic past and creative activities like this help them to move forward with their lives and become more open to the rest of the world.
