For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. One of them is V Dhanushya, 18, who is studying nursing. “Thaiamma has taken care of me since I was six months old. She promised the mother that she would take care of the baby. “The baby hardly had any strength. She used to be called ‘insect’ by the people in the neighbourhood. The doctor said that she might not survive beyond a month. But she did for over a year, under my care. I named her Shakthi,” recalls Vanitha.Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many have become professionals in various fields, including medical care, engineering, counselling, banking, etc.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of 80 children under its care. The scourge of coronavirus has hit daily wage workers the hardest who lack savings or access to basic necessities. Around our eArthshala campus in Kishanganj District, Bihar the majority of people are daily wage workers in tea gardens, farms, and brick kilns. With the nationwide lockdown, all but the most necessary work has been shuttered, so daily wage labourers are without a livelihood. Many of these families lack ration cards or bank accounts, and even for those who have them, ATMs are often inaccessible or lack money once people reach them. We have been working closely with the district administration on awareness activities (which will continue) and now we are going to ensure that the 250 daily-wage earning families and 1,250 people living in the villages around our eArthshala campus have food and basic sanitary materials for the next 15 days.

If you had to choose between food or getting vaccinated, what would you choose?According to scientific evidence, vaccination is the best way to protect people from COVID-19 and to prevent avoidable deaths during the second wave of the pandemic. Our goal is to support 10,000+ daily wage workers in getting vaccinated over the next 3 months.However, we work primarily with daily wage workers in Kishanganj District, Bihar, and they face a difficult choice: 1.  Take the day off from work to get vaccinated at the cost of not feeding their families that evening2. Or, skip vaccination to earn their wages at the risk of getting COVID-19Given this choice, vaccination rates are extremely low in the areas we serve, where most people work as daily wage workers. This issue is compounded by low awareness of the benefits of vaccination and by misinformation. Working with and through community leaders, we are spreading awareness about the benefits of vaccination and are providing a ration packet to each daily wage earning family whose members get vaccinated.
