I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. Quality Education Support Trust (QUEST) has been working in the field of quality education since 2007. QUEST has devised different programs to cater the variable needs from the field of education. Strengthening teachers and creating the knowledge base in the field of education through research and practice has become an area of main focus throughout these years.Early grade reading is still an emerging field in India esp. in the context of ground breaking research in Indian languages for children learning in difficult circumstances. Despite every teacher dealing with it inside the classrooms there are no noteworthy efforts to amalgamate best practices in this domain esp. in varied socio-linguistic contexts. Teachers either follow a prototype suggested by the state or try to emulate a model spread by word of mouth without adequate training.The existing approach to improve early grade reading is way inadequate to address the issues faced by teachers inside classrooms. On one hand we have learning material without adequate supportive training and on other there are training programmes giving short shrift to scientifically developed learning material. These anomalies need course correction. The symposium will be a step in that direction to exhibit best practices and research connecting both the theoretical and practical aspects of early grade reading in an organic manner.
