“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. "My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. There is a need in our times of accelerated climate change to pivot societies towards a livable and thriving future for all of us. Human-induced climate change is upon us and it is increasingly affecting every region of the world through more intense weather and climate extremes. Cities are a major contributor to pollution and climate change, and at the same time, they hold huge potential to be centres of transformation. According to recent census, about 60% of the country’s population will live in cities by 2050 - that is an estimation of 996 million people, at India's rate of urbanization. Societies, institutes, organisations and industries can no longer afford to continue to be part of the problem responsible for accelerating climate change and will instead need to see major transformations towards a future that cares for people and the planet. In order to imagine and create solutions that are designed for such emergent futures, we need radical spaces that pave the way for new ways of learning and working together.  
 For over 18 years, Quest Alliance has worked closely with diverse partners to promote the effective and responsible use of technology to scale Education, Employability and Entrepreneurship. Our impact has grown from an initial 10000 students in 2006 to currently reaching over 400,000 youth and children per year across India. Quest’s programs - Anandshala, Secondary School Program, MyQuest, Master Coach and Change Leaders Academy are each different approaches to facilitate collaborative learning networks towards systemic change. Quest Learning Observatory

High rates of disengagement and absenteeism result in poor learning levels and steady drop out rates in government schools across Samastipur, Bihar. At the core of this problem is inadequate teacher capacity building programs. Teachers in these government schools are the most deprived, with limited access to resources to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and receptiveness for learning. For the past 5 years, Anandshala has been collaborating with the state and district education department in Samastipur, Bihar to address the issue of student absenteeism. We have seen positive impact with the dropout rate reducing from 33% to 8%. However, chronic absenteeism still remains, with the average attendance rate being at 60%. 
 To combat poor learning levels and dropouts, Anandshala equips teachers with technology to create engaging classrooms. Digital lessons can be used as triggers for classroom learning activities such as creative writing, discussions and role plays to engage students and reinforce curriculum concepts. Training teachers to use the technology will ensure new teaching practices, shifting away from the traditional chalk-and-talk methods to a more participatory, student centred learning environment. 
 Training teachers in the use of educational technology teachers will acquire knowledge and access quality resources to ensure student-friendly learning experiences. By creating a more engaging and active classroom environment, students will attend school more regularly, increase levels of engagement with school activities and show improvements in their communication and foundational skills. This in turn will prevent dropouts and ensure that children stay in school.
