"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Covid is wreaking havoc in our tribal areas leaving them gasping for breathe. Cut of from the rest of the civilisation, they are scared of testing - there is limited testing available - they get treated by quacks and reach the covid care centres only when things get out of hands. They are in critical condition and need oxygen which is not available and they succumb. Situation is getting critical with each passing day. The fragile healthcare infrastructure has completely collapsed causing the areas to have the lowest recovery rates. Help is needed at multiple fronts. 
 We are working on multiple fronts - saving lives and protecting lives. Provision of oxygen cylinders for saving lives and supporting with PPE kits, oximeters, masks and gloves and water for the patients and care givers are some other support we are providing. We are working to create awareness and working closely with the district administration to create awareness among communities and pushing them to staf safe, stay aware and test immediately. We also need to raise funds to providing ration to the poor communities as well as provide support to the children orphaned by covid. There is so much we are doing and need to do and intend to do. 
 Our impact will save lives - over 600 people are testing positive everyday and reach the covid care centres at the last stage and availability of oxygen concentrators will save their lives. Even well after Covid comes under control we will continue to save lives as these oxygen concentrators will be used in the PHC and the local zilla parishad hospitals which are bereft of any such facilities.Our effort on protecting lives will hopefully reduce the number of people getting affected.

The phenomenon of climate change is out of the denial stage and acknowledged globally today as a serious threat to life on earth. It is an outcome of the massive release of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide and methane, in the past few decades andhas manifested in all parts of the world as large-scale shifts in weather patterns. These shifts have endangered ecological balance in multiple ways which demand the most urgent attention because if left unchecked, they could eventually spiral into severechallenges to food security and public health, and increased competition for water, to further exacerbate the already existing social tensions and violent conflict. Hence it is as much an ecological issue as a human one, and we must act before it becomes too late.Since these global changes appear in different forms in different parts of the world, it is necessary to intervene at the local level, and fortunately, this has been demonstrated as possible, through persistent and focused efforts with the involvement and cooperation of local communities whose very survival is at stake due to these changes.These are the vulnerable communities, living at subsistence level in forests and mountains at the periphery of the overwhelmingly urbanised world. Since this problem is not of their making, it becomes the responsibility of the more fortunate to protectthem by devising appropriate strategies and taking actions to mitigate the ill-effects of climate change on their lives so as to save, support and upgrade their ecologies as well as their livelihoods. 
 We will grow a seven-layered dense food forest, so that every layer is a source of food and income. There will be1. tall trees (moringa, mango, tamarind),2. low height trees (citrus - lemons ),3. shrubs (pigeon pea/tuvar for nitrogen fixing, insect repellent flowers),4. herbs (mint),5. ground cover grasses (vetiver/khus, lemon grass),6. root (turmeric, sweet potato),7. vines (betel leaf)There will be around 30-50 different species of plants in every forest, bringing in rich biodiversity. No chemicals of any sort will be used. Every tree will be geotagged for the purpose of documentation, monitoring and donor feedback. The trees become fairlyindependent within three to four years of plantation, while some may even start fruiting within two years. Market linkages such as farmer-producer organisations will be set up so that the farmers develop entrepreneurial skills and get a good price for their produce.All the produce from the forest will be marketed appropriately and the proceeds will be returned to the farmers, without any role for middlemen. 
 1. De-risk from the impact of Climate Change. Global temperatures are expected to increase. Biodiversity ensures a better chance of some of the plants withstanding higher temperatures, thus providing a greater level of food security2. Increased biomass, boosting organic productivity with reduced runoff and improved water retention.3. Increased ground water recharge which supports increasing organic productivity further down in a catchment.4. Control on soil erosion5. Carbon sequestration. Each mature tree will sequester around 25 kg of carbon dioxide and vetiver grass will sequester an additional 2 kg/sqmtrs.6. Increased livelihood opportunities created by harvesting, packaging activities7. Financially sound and stable tribal communities. Improved rural economy as farmers earn and spend in the villages8. Happy and healthy tribal indigenous communities, leading a life of dignity and prosperity in their own villages and practicing their traditions, beliefs, art and dance forms and thereby preserving the ancient tribal cultural heritage.
