Many wish to work as domestic help, but people do not allow them even to enter their homes, says Priyo Lall, CEO of the non-profit. She questions, “what are these people to do if not beg?” People with leprosy are often driven out of their homes and villages and are compelled to beg on city streets for survival. According to Lall, “Even their own children don’t want their parents to come to their house. They are completely ostracised. For decades they have been suffering the stigma of being a leprosy patient and discrimination from society.” Lall says that, but for Shiv Sadan, over 200 leprosy patients would have still been on the streets, and their families also would not have any other option but to beg.Donate to NGO Raphael While explaining the plight of homeless leprosy patients, Lall says, “These patients, although recovered from leprosy, still have severe deformities. She is a two-year-old who suffers from a developmental delay and cerebral palsy.When she arrived at Raphael she had **a squint in her left eye. She also did not have proper control of her movements.**After several physiotherapy sessions, Shubhani’s state has improved a great deal. **Her squint has lessened and her hand-eye coordination has increased. She is also able to hold her head up and sit for 5 minutes without support.**Subhani's mother is filled with joy at her daughter's progress. She now feels optimistic about the future of her child. About The Program With the primary intent of providing relief from suffering, Raphael runs the Raphael Special School for children with intellectual disabilities. During the day, the children are put into different classes depending on their mental age. Very small children are admitted to the Early Intervention Unit and are taught by special educators. The school runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Monday through Friday. After the successful completion of their academic course, which lasts several years, the children with the potential of learning are given vocational training are provided training for jobs. The ones who acquire a reasonable degree of skills are employed in the rehabilitative workshop of Raphael and are paid. About The NGO Situated in Dehradun, Raphael was founded by renowned humanists, Lord Leonard Cheshire, and his wife Baroness Sue Ryder in April 1959. They have worked with people suffering from Leprosy, Tuberculosis, and Intellectual impairment, touching more than 22,000 lives in the process. Leprosy cured patients and intellectually challenged residents are also encouraged to work in their Rehabilitative Workshop, for which they are remunerated accordingly. Apart from running a school and shelter home for their students, they also have a Community based rehabilitation project, as part of which they work with children in government schools. Once the students in their residential home grow up, they are encouraged to live in a home environment under the supervision of a house parent, while they attend classes at the day center. This helps prepare them for independent living in the community.

The objective of the SE Programme is to generate awareness, through advocacy, about Persons with Disability (PwD); identify and assess children ( to include young adults) with intellectual &amp; other developmental disabilities (such as, but not limited to Autism, Cerebral Palsy &amp; Down Syndrome); educate &amp; train children with disabilities (CwD) to realise their potential; and facilitate their rehabilitation in the family and community. 
 On campus facilities and services include:·         Assisted independent living in a simulated ‘home’ environment for young adults – separately for 4 girls &amp; 4 boys.·         Residential facilities, separately for 60 girls &amp; 60 boys. ·         SE School cum Day Care Centre with a capacity for 150 CwD to include non-residents to include an early intervention centre, class rooms, a sensory room, a library, a computer laboratory, and vocational training and therapeutic services.      
 The focus on campus is on functional academics; language and communication skills; and the acquiring of daily living, house-hold, domestic &amp; vocational skills. The emphasis, throughout, is on ‘inclusive’ learning and activity.

Impact Born on 15th August 1947, Subhash is one of Raphael's senior-most residents and has been with them for the last 40 years. He was elated and overjoyed to celebrate his 70th birthday by hoisting the National flag on Independence Day. Subhash loves talking to people, and no passer-by can escape his "Apka naam kya hai?' (What is your name?) question. Fondly called as 'Dada', his sweet and amiable temperament make him a favorite with both elders and children. Age has caught up with him and these days he can be seen sitting and sunning himself in his armchair outside his room. He might have grown weak in strength but not in spirit, and he loves to participate in all cultural programmes at the Centre. This year Subhash took a proud and independent decision to vote for his political party in the February State legislative elections. About The Program Based in Dehradun, Raphael supports a number of adults who were brought to the center by their parents or guardians when they were children many years back. Unfortunately, nobody has returned to claim these people till date, and they are left under the care of the staff. There are an adequate number of male and female helpers, who take good care of these people. Raphael also provides these beneficiaries with vocational training in different activities based on their capabilities. These activities range from gardening and peon training to candle making and manufacturing fabric and paper products. Having their lives upturned by being fired from their jobs, tossed out of their homes, and abandoned by their families, the residents of Shiv Sadan (run by Raphael) are desperate for help to save their home from crumbling. Your support has truly made a remarkable difference, and we're thrilled to share some heartwarming insights from the visit. 🙌😊 Field Visit Date: 18/08/2023Field Visit by: Nehal Negi, Sr. Associate, Online Giving Delivery Team - Give Visit Summary:We visited Shiv Sadan, run by Raphael in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, providing a home for 24 leprosy-affected residents and their families. Some residents work at Raphael and their children receive educational support. Shelter, food, healthcare, security, employment opportunities, and support for their children are all provided at Raphael. Most residents were abandoned by families due to their medical conditions. The quarters are in bad shape with the ceilings on the verge of collapse, old pathways, and an inadequate drainage system, especially challenging during monsoons. The renovation work of the quarters is in progress, aiming to be completed by year-end. The rooms and kitchen were once interconnected without privacy. But now a door has been constructed for privacy and additional security. The medical room is well-equipped, recently renovated with contributions from this campaign, as the roof and ceiling were crumbling. ﻿Currently, due to the third wave of the pandemic, most of the students of the Special Education Programme are at home with their families. Since they are a vulnerable group, Raphael has decided to only call them back to the campus once a safety clearance is given. Students are attending online classes, completing their assignments are home with the help of their family and are in constant touch with their teachers who are monitoring their progress each day.
