The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. Many children face neglect, with parents consumed by substance abuse, leaving them to fend for themselves. As Asha explains, "Bare basics like food, shelter, and clothing are not available. "She wanted to study but was being forced into child marriage," Asha shares. Magic Bus intervened, rallying the women in the village to stop the wedding. "We told them this girl is a child herself. The wedding was canceled, and the girl continued her education.According to Asha, children from villages have a burning desire to study and make a successful life for themselves but very rarely do these dreams come true. "There is a boy in our programme. Despite being alone, he studies, does all the housework, and looks after his younger siblings," Asha recounts. When his parents tried to take him and his siblings to work at a brick kiln, the boy resisted, saying, "I want to study and I want my young siblings to study as well."Why Education MattersEducation is the key to breaking the cycle of generational poverty. Refai Academy and Welfare Trust is a registered Trust working for the welfare of the communities belonging to the low socio-economic groups of Gujarat, India by means of catering to their educational, healthcare, and social welfare needs.In furtherance of its objective of providing quality education to underprivileged children, the Trust founded Refai Public School, Boru, at village Boru, Taluka Kalol, District Panchmahlas, Gujarat, India in June 2012, with the school operating from rented premises. The school provides all learning essentials like books, uniforms, and meals from the funds that it receives from its generous donors.The school endeavors to provide education to its students in keeping with the Gujarat State Education Board (GSEB) English medium curriculum and has had its Pre-primary division functional since June 2012 at Boru. In the 10 years that the school has been operational, it has grown from the strength of 86 students to 440 today.  The 1400 square feet rented school building has moved to a spacious 20,010 square feet (G+2 structure) self-owned premise.The Trust provides from its own funds, the entire needs of the children, providing all the books, stationery, uniforms, mid-day meals, and infrastructure necessary. The school is staffed with qualified and dedicated teachers, who commute daily, by school bus, from Vadodara. The school is currently incurring a yearly expenditure of INR 36,000/- per child, wherein the child contributes a token amount of INR 3,000/- per year, leaving an individual deficit of INR 33,000/- per child, which is subsidized by the Trust.The progression from primary schooling to secondary schooling is a far-fetched dream for many students in rural communities. With Refai Public School, Boru being established in the community itself, the motivation and hopes for progression have increased. The unwavering aim of the school management is to provide its students with a quality education regardless of the cost and let every student enrolled at the school have an opportunity to fulfill their dreams of leading a more dignified, better life.
