Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

“I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Rescue Foundation is an NGO registered in the year 2000 founded by the late Mr. Balkrishna Acharya and his wife Mrs. Triveni Acharya who is the current CEO &amp; President. We conduct intelligence-based operations, assisting the state police and Anti Human Trafficking Units to free girls who have been trafficked into prostitution. We work off missing reports that are sent to us by partner NGO's, Police and in some cases, directly from the families. Our legal team also works with public prosecutors to get convictions against alleged perpetrators while also working towards victim compensation. Each year we rescue an average of 150 girls. Rescued girls are moved to our safe homes where we create a comprehensive care plan tailored to each individual consisting of education, healthcare, counselling, various forms of vocational &amp; skill training and legal aid. Each year we provide support for 400 - 500 girls. Once the duration of the stay is over, we repatriate survivors to their homes, either directly or hand them over to partner NGO's or to Parents. We run aftercare programs where girls can choose to stay in an open home while we help them with education and jobs. We also conduct several awareness programs in colleges, universities, communities, etc.

Triveni, in collaboration with her husband, initiated these rescue operations and established the Rescue Foundation, which currently provides shelter and support to approximately 450 girls, all aged 12 and above. These underage girls receive essential provisions such as three daily meals, clothing, resources, and crucial medical care. A standout feature of the foundation's operation is its meticulous case management system. The dedicated case workers craft individualized care plans for each beneficiary, taking into account their age, condition, and abilities. Furthermore, the foundation ensures that minors are given access to education appropriate for their age. Additionally, the girls are actively engaged in skill development programs, which include in-house trainers providing training in areas like jewelry making and handbag crafting. They are also encouraged to participate in livelihood creation activities such as tailoring and basic computer skills. The primary objective of the case workers is to provide counseling to the victims and facilitate their reintegration into society. This approach is pivotal in helping these young girls regain their physical and mental well-being after enduring the trauma of illegal prostitution. It's noteworthy that the foundation extends its support until the girls reach stability and can make informed decisions about their future. Typically, the girls reside in the foundation's hostel until they reach 18 years of age, after which they are relocated to a working women's hostel. 🌟 Your support is a lifeline for many, and it helps us build a world where everyone can live with dignity and fulfillment. There are millions of women and children who are victims of trafficking in India, in 2018, NCRB data shows over 2 lakh women and children went missing.It is regarded that the majority of women and girls are trafficked for sexual exploitation, they are lured away by promises of better lives, jobs, education, even love, while traffickers also prey on those in vulnerable situations and coerce them into prostitution.Trafficked girls are subjected to physical, mental and sexual abuse in order for them to submit and are forced to entertain 20-30 customers a day. While conducting rescue operations, we’ve also found girls crammed into hidden rooms with little to no ventilation and limited food/water.Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Bangalore are known as destination areas, where girls are trafficked to, cities like West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka etc, are known as source areas, which are areas where girls are trafficked from, even countries like Nepal and Bangladesh as well.Traditional prostitution areas like Red Light areas are present in most major cities however, there is now an increase in the use of establishments like Massage parlors, spas, lodges and even private residences. 
 Since 2000 we've been conducting rescue operations across the country and have rescued thousands of girls. We currently operate 4 fully equipped shelter homes:Mumbai – 100 GirlsBoisar – 125 GirlsPune – 100 GirlsDelhi – 100 GirlsWe are also entrusted with caring for girls rescued by the police and other anti-trafficking organizations.Rescued girls need immediate healthcare and counselling, we have in house counselors and doctors on call, while we also work with government/private hospitals and partner with mental health organizations so that our girls get the best support. Each girl has an individual care plan created which is developed keeping her best interests in mind. We employ various trainers who train the girls in various forms of vocations like computers, tailoring, bag making, jewelry making, beauty therapist, spoken English, basic literacy and even support them with formal education through NIOS, government schools and colleges.Survivors are also part of Child committee’s in each home where child leaders are groomed to represent their groups’ and actively participate in the management of the home.Our legal teams will also be working with them to help claim compensation and assist the state in prosecuting perpetrators. 
 Our goal is to help women and girls who have been forced into prostitution, to rescue them, to provide them with all the support they need to recover and move forward with their lives.Each year we rescue an average of 150 girls, while we provide care and protection to 400 – 500 women and girls with a wide range of programs and help them get home.Last year we rescued 155 girls, cared for 533 girls and helped 535 girls get home.Our goal for this year is to rescue 200 women and girls and provide support to about 600 as well.
