“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. The short term and long term issue is the lack of adequate income in the villages of Bargarh, Odisha that needs to addressed. The incidences of farmers’ suicide are infamous in Bargarh. The farmers, entirely dependent on monsoon for irrigation, face myriad problems such as limited affordability to expensive fertilizers and pesticides, loans at high interest from private moneylenders and frequent production failure due to problems such as Brown Plant Hoppers (BPH) which has been destroying paddy crops leading to huge crop loss by farmers. The small and marginal farmers used to heavily supplement their agricultural income by working in nearby towns as daily wage workers, a choice no longer available due to COVID19 crisis. Few farmers used to work in petty shops, small hotels, road side businesses which have been severely affected in the lockdown. Also, markets of agricultural outputs have been disrupted and produce had to be sold at meagre rates. Families are overly dependent on migrant income from towns and cities which have taken a severe hit during COVID19 crisis. The small and marginal farmers are left with very little resources to carry out agricultural activities for Kharif season 2020.  
 In line with the philosophy of Rise Against Hunger India to build solution around  microenvironments, RAHI is working with 600 farmers of 4 FPOs to create millets value chain. Millets have been strategically chosen as the crop for intervention as the area is drought prone ad millets are drought proof. Millets are not totally alien to the farmers as they used to grow millets but had moved to paddy and maize with the hope of earning more income. Major issues that need addressigna are non-affordability of fertilizers, farm machinery and agricultural inputs. RAHI is helping farmers build organic fertilizers by methods such as vermicomposting. Custom Hiring Centres and Tool Banks are being set up where common machinery shall be provided which can be used by farmers by paying minimal rent. Seed banks is also being set up for provision and preservation of seeds. The rent collected shall be used by the FPO for maintenance of machinery and purchase other requirements. Provision shall be made for production units to create millet products such as millet powder and biscuits that fetch higher price in the market. 
 The expected impact is to build resilience to overcome systemic and idiosyncratic shocks that arise in future. RAHI is expecting a growth of 80-100 percent in production and 100 percent in income of farmers. This shall help in the overall growth of standard of living of small and marginal farmers in Bargarh. This shall reduce their dependence on migrant income and create opportunities within the village.  Migration creates immense vulnerability for the migrants as was highly visible at a national scale during the COVID19 crisis. With adequate income available in villages, the need for migration can be stopped and the cycle of poverty reversed. With additional income, the dependency on money lenders shall also reduce. With reduced economic vulnerability, the farmers shall also achieve more confidence to take part in socio-political issues and overall welfare of the village. The environmental impacts are also significant as millets consume much less water than other crops and can help improve the water table of the villages.  Millets are also rich sources of phytochemicals and micronutrients and shall also improve nutrition levels of villagers.

Stop Migration - Increase Income in villages (Bargarh, Odisha)

India, with a population of over 1.3 billion, has seen tremendous growth in the past two decades. Gross Domestic Product has increased 4.5 times and per capita consumption has increased 3 times. Similarly, food grain production has increased almost 2 times. However, despite phenomenal industrial and economic growth and while India produces sufficient food to feed its population, it is unable to provide access to food to a large number of people, especially women and children.State of Hunger in IndiaAccording to FAO estimates in ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, 2018” report, 195.9 million people are undernourished in India. By this measure 14.8% of the population is undernourished in India. Also, 51.4% of women in reproductive age between 15 to 49 years are anaemic. Further according to the report 38.4% of the children aged under five in India are stunted (too short for their age), while 21% suffer from wasting, meaning their weight is too low for their height. Malnourished children have a higher risk of death from common childhood illnesses such as diarrhea, pneumonia, and malaria. The Global Hunger Index 2017 ranks India at 100 out of 119 countries on the basis of three leading indicators -- prevalence of wasting and stunting in children under 5 years, under 5 child mortality rate, and the proportion of undernourished in the population.Food Loss &amp; Food WasteOn the other hand, it is estimated that nearly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year gets lost or wasted. 40 percent of the fruits and vegetables, and 30 percent of cereals that are produced are lost due to inefficient supply chain management and do not reach the consumer markets. While significant levels of food losses occur upstream, at harvest and during post-harvest handling, a lot of food is lost or wasted during the distribution and consumption stages. Some food is also wasted on the shelves and in the warehouses of food businesses either due to excess production, introduction of new products, labeling errors, or due to shorter remaining shelf life. Be a Hunger Champion 

COVID19 has led to severe economic impacts all over the country, but largely in major cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune, where daily wage works, migrants, rag pickers, orphans, elderly are left with very meagre resources to address the need of food and other basic necessities. 
 Rise Against Hunger India has been working in partnership with over 75 organizations catering to the basic needs of daily wage workers, housemaids, street vendors, roadside sellers, rag pickers, destitutes, orphans &amp; abandoned senior citizens. RAHI has already supplied 1 million meals to these vulnerable &amp; worst-hit group during the period of March 25 to May 05, 2020. 
 The immediate outcome we want to achieve is to ensure that communities under distress have enough food to eat and sustain themselves till complete normalcy is restored. This will serve the dual objective of addressing the immediate issue of food scarcity and uncertainty that these people are facing and, alongside that, it will assure them some sort of stability to restart their livelihood options.

COVID19 Response

The second wave has thrown additional challenges and has created distress on sections of society that were not considered to be in dire distress and were not catered to earlier by Rise Against Hunger India. This is the community of crematorium workers. Due to second wave of COVID-19, there is immense pressure on the crematoriums and the workers are working night and day to meet the ongoing demand. These workers have very little wages and require support so that they can continue to carry on the immense service to mankind. These workers are continuously exposed to people who have died due to COVID-19 virus. The workers and their families need to be provided adequate nutrition so that they can maintain strong immunity against the virus. The need continues to be high and we are in a tough situation to meet the ongoing needs of the families of crematorium workers. 
 i.  Rise Against Hunger India shall provide meals to crematorium workers and their families in Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai. Each family shall be provided 1296 dry, uncooked, fortified meals each month for a period of three months (432 meals for each month).ii.  100 families in Bangalore, 50 families in Delhi, and 80 families of crematorium workers in Mumbai shall be provided support by Rise Against Hunger India.iii.  Meals provided by Rise Against Hunger India contain essential nutrients: Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Niacin, Calcium, Iron, Phosphorus, Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Molybdenum, Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid. Consumption of fortified meals provided by Rise Against Hunger India shall mitigate the issues of food security and food diversity.iv.   An amount of 5000 rupees shall be provided to each family so that they can purchase nutritious food items during these stressful times. 
 The primary outcome is that the beneficiaries will have enough food to eat and sustain themselves for 3 months and can develop
