“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. The second wave of the covid pandemic has hit the country hard, especially in medical infrastructure, in disaster relief camps, and visibly in education.Kerala stands as the state where people are severely affected by the virus reporting an average of 20,000 cases per day. Oxygen shortage is the most dangerous limitation in the treatment and betterment of the health of the patients. The sought solution is the copious supply of oxygen cylinders and concentrators. However, a necessity of 22 to 30 cylinders being replaced per patient per day for oxygen supply pose manpower and infrastructural limitations, and other unforeseen problems of mishandling, such as breaking oxygen flowmeters and unnecessary leakage of oxygen. The month of May 2021 saw Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Tauktae devastate the western coastal areas of our peninsula. Heavy rainfall, flooding, landslides, and coastal erosion in Kerala led thousands to evacuate and take refuge in relief camps. The camps are small-sized and partitioned and have isolated testing facilities. Requirements such as PPE kits, Gloves, Masks have been inquired for in these camps, along with the basic needs of food rations, potable water, sanitation, baby care essentials, etc. Virtual schooling is an effect of the pandemic that the school-going kids have gotten used to. Unfortunately, there are school kids still awaiting educational assistance as we can see from the pouring in of requests for television and mobile phones and educational supplies for this academic year. 
 <ul><li>To assist local Government Hospitals in Kerala in establishing oxygen supply and/or medical gas piping thereby upgrading the existing normal beds to oxygen beds.</li></ul>OXYGEN BEDS: To understand the shortage of oxygen beds, we contacted the Regional Medical Officers of hospitals. Based on the sourced information, the Government Hospitals in three districts in Kerala, are looking to expand their infrastructure facilities. In two districts, normal wards need to be converted to Covid patient treatment wards by setting up a pipeline system to provide oxygen supply, whereas, in the third district, high-cost equipment is needed to stabilize the pressure of oxygen supply to the patients. The only possible solution is the conversion of existing normal beds to beds with oxygen supply by providing medical gas piping facilities and associated infrastructure. An approximate estimate of Rs 5 lakhs or above is calculated for upgrading a single ward of 25 beds on average. <ul><li>To help provide COVID infection control and recovery supplies to the relief camps in the cyclone and flood-affected regions in Kerala.</li></ul>CYCLONE &amp; FLOOD RELIEF: The areas worst hit by flooding and coastal erosion are identified and the local relief camps will be intimated soon. The volunteers in the area will be deployed to collect the list of essentials from the camps. Depending on the location, either monetary assistance or provision for supplies will be presented.<ul><li>To assist students in attending the ongoing online classes in their virtual schooling during this pandemic.</li></ul>EDUCATION SUPPORT: We continue to receive requests from school principals and faculty for supporting online education and have been actively dispatching mobile phones or television sets since the previous year, especially with the pandemic surge. 
 OXYGEN BEDS: In this time of extreme demand for Oxygen, private hospitals are charging exorbitantly huge amounts per day for Oxygen beds, that a common man in the state cannot bear. For a common man, the primary resort for treatment is their local Government Hospital and hence it is worthwhile investing the money to such hospitals where treatment is bearable. Expanding and equipping the medical facilities of Government Hospitals will help the citizens, not just now but for all forthcoming treatments. The impacts include access to quality care for the vulnerable population, regulation of healthcare market prices, and a long-term solution for upcoming waves of Covid.CYCLONE &amp; FLOOD RELIEF : The pandemic demands us to social distance and stay indoors whereas cyclones and floods require us to evacuate to safer disaster-relief camps. The relief camps have separate divisions of covid positive and negative inmates, and it is extremely important to have stock of covid relief supplies. The impact we wish to create is to make relief camps less prone to becoming a covid hotspot.EDUCATION SUPPORT: "When the going gets tough, the tough get going."The beauty of human minds is their resilience in overcoming obstacles. Be it a dreadful pandemic or devastating floods, the cheer on a kid's face while seeing their schoolteacher brings happiness to everyone. We wish to retain their smiles even as their schools become virtual classes. We, at Rise Up Forum, have been active since the beginning in delivering education support for school kids and will continue to do so with greater resolve this time to make education accessible to everyone.
