Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. This includes constant care and round-the-clock medical attention, nutritious food and maintaining a hygienic environment to keep the seniors in comfort and good health. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. That's the world we're striving to create at Ritham Special School for the Intellectually Disabled Children.We are nestled in the heart of rural and gross root Tamil Nadu, is serving as a beacon of hope for Gifted Children like Intellectually Disabilities, Autism, Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD and Multiple challenged children. What began with just four students has grown into a safe space for over 85 special children, offering education and therapies tailored to their unique needs.Our work extends beyond the classroom. We're breaking down barriers, advocating for child rights, and empowering families with knowledge about government schemes and networks. From early intervention to vocational training, every aspect of our program is designed to nurture independence and self-reliance. Together, we're bridging the gap between rural and urban, ensuring that no child is left behind.But our mission doesn't end there. We've identified a pressing need among the underprivileged gifted children in our community. Many parents, struggling to make ends meet as daily wage earners, are unable to access the special education their gifted children desperately require. That's where we step in. We are willing to extend the special education and other mentioned services to more rural and underprivileged students.Begun as a Special School only, now it is growing with Early Intervention centre, Vocational Training centre, Sheltered Workshop, Learning Centre, Autism Treatment Centre and Outpatient Department centre. We are travelling towards the effective special education available to the rural, poor and underprivileged special students as like as the urban area special students for the past 21 years continuously.

Children with intellectual disabilities face significant barriers to education, healthcare, and social inclusion, particularly in rural areas. According to the 2011 Census, there are 2,927 individuals with disabilities in the Virudhunagar district, with 1,601 males and 1,326 females. Many of these children are from families that struggle with financial constraints and lack awareness of available support services.Ritham Charitable Trust has been dedicated to addressing these challenges by providing special education, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy to children with intellectual disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Initially started with just four students, Ritham now serves over 85 children across 26 villages in and around Rajapalayam.Ritham operates as a day-care center, ensuring safe transportation for children, enabling them to access education and therapy services without adding financial stress on families. Over time, the institution has expanded its programs to include an Early Intervention Centre, Vocational Training Centre, Sheltered Workshop, Learning Centre, Autism Treatment Centre, and Outpatient Department to offer comprehensive support for children with special needs.For the past 20 years, our trust has been working towards making quality special education and therapeutic services available to rural, underprivileged children, ensuring they receive the same opportunities as those in urban areas.Problem Statement:Children with intellectual disabilities in rural areas face severe marginalization due to societal stigma, lack of infrastructure, financial constraints, and the absence of trained professionals. Our door-to-door survey found 100 special children in and around Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar District, who have never attended school due to:·      Lack of Awareness: Many families believe that disabilities result from ancestral curses or karma, leading to neglect.·      Extreme Poverty: Many parents work as daily wage laborers and cannot afford specialized education or therapy for their children.·      Inaccessible Public Transport: The available public transport is not disabled-friendly, making it impossible for children to commute independently.·      Poor Educational Infrastructure: Rural schools lack trained teachers, specialized learning materials, ramps, accessible washrooms, and inclusive teaching methods.·      Social Stigma and Isolation: Families of children with disabilities often face discrimination in marriage, social functions, and community participation, further pushing them into isolation.<ul><li>Health and Safety Concerns: Some children are left unattended at home, leading to poor hygiene, malnutrition, and vulnerability to abuse.</li></ul>
