Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. This includes constant care and round-the-clock medical attention, nutritious food and maintaining a hygienic environment to keep the seniors in comfort and good health. This is the world we are working to create at Ritham Special School.Founded in 2004 with just four children, Ritham Charitable Trust has grown into a trusted centre of hope and opportunity for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD and multiple disabilities in rural Tamil Nadu.For more than 22 years, we have been working to bridge the gap between rural and urban communities by bringing quality special education, therapy and rehabilitation services closer to children who otherwise have limited access to them.Today, Ritham supports children from rural and economically disadvantaged families through a holistic, child-centred approach. Our services include special education, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, early intervention, autism support, vocational training, sheltered employment, learning support and outpatient rehabilitation services.Our work goes far beyond the classroom. We help children develop communication, motor skills, social skills, daily living skills and greater independence according to their individual abilities and needs. Through vocational training and livelihood support, we also help older children and young adults develop skills that can lead to greater self-reliance and meaningful participation in society.We also work closely with families. Many parents in our rural communities are daily-wage workers or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and cannot afford private special education and therapy services. We support families with awareness about disability, child rights, government welfare schemes and available community resources, helping them become stronger advocates for their children.Why Ritham is neededIn rural communities, children with disabilities often face multiple barriers—including poverty, lack of specialised services, limited awareness and the long distance to urban rehabilitation centres. As a result, many children miss the critical opportunities they need during their developmental years.Ritham exists to change this.We are committed to making effective special education, therapy, rehabilitation and vocational opportunities accessible to children from rural and underprivileged families—so that disability, poverty or geographical location does not determine a child's future.Our journey began with four children. Today, we continue that journey with a larger vision: to reach more rural communities, support more children and build a society where every child with a disability is respected, included and given the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.Our vision is simple:No child with a disability should be left behind because of poverty, geography or lack of opportunity.Together, we can help every child learn, participate, become independent and live with dignity.

Children with intellectual disabilities face significant barriers to education, healthcare, and social inclusion, particularly in rural areas. According to the 2011 Census, there are 2,927 individuals with disabilities in the Virudhunagar district, with 1,601 males and 1,326 females. Many of these children are from families that struggle with financial constraints and lack awareness of available support services.Ritham Charitable Trust has been dedicated to addressing these challenges by providing special education, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy to children with intellectual disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Initially started with just four students, Ritham now serves over 85 children across 26 villages in and around Rajapalayam.Ritham operates as a day-care center, ensuring safe transportation for children, enabling them to access education and therapy services without adding financial stress on families. Over time, the institution has expanded its programs to include an Early Intervention Centre, Vocational Training Centre, Sheltered Workshop, Learning Centre, Autism Treatment Centre, and Outpatient Department to offer comprehensive support for children with special needs.For the past 20 years, our trust has been working towards making quality special education and therapeutic services available to rural, underprivileged children, ensuring they receive the same opportunities as those in urban areas.Problem Statement:Children with intellectual disabilities in rural areas face severe marginalization due to societal stigma, lack of infrastructure, financial constraints, and the absence of trained professionals. Our door-to-door survey found 100 special children in and around Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar District, who have never attended school due to:·      Lack of Awareness: Many families believe that disabilities result from ancestral curses or karma, leading to neglect.·      Extreme Poverty: Many parents work as daily wage laborers and cannot afford specialized education or therapy for their children.·      Inaccessible Public Transport: The available public transport is not disabled-friendly, making it impossible for children to commute independently.·      Poor Educational Infrastructure: Rural schools lack trained teachers, specialized learning materials, ramps, accessible washrooms, and inclusive teaching methods.·      Social Stigma and Isolation: Families of children with disabilities often face discrimination in marriage, social functions, and community participation, further pushing them into isolation.<ul><li>Health and Safety Concerns: Some children are left unattended at home, leading to poor hygiene, malnutrition, and vulnerability to abuse.</li></ul>
