The fragile ecosystem of the Himalayas, containing treasures of natural resources, has been highly vulnerable to these destructive changes. The ill-planned development process and growing pressure of human beings have caused nearly irreparable losses of soil, water and vegetation. This has not only affected the beauty and wealth of the Himalayas But is affecting the other parts of the Country as well.This calls for adopting the Ecosystem approach to development. The three vital natural resources viz. Soil, water and vegetation along with people are the main focus of this approach.The area being mountainous and vegetation cover being sparse; it is badly affected by soil erosion. Urgent measures need to be taken for soil conservation in these areas. Besides this streams need to be channelled and stabilised. Himachal Pradesh gets much better annual precipitation than the nation's average. Even then, the state faces acute water shortages,s especially during summer. Due to excessive pressure on land and water, the water table has gone down resulting in water scarcity and land degradation.   
 Water is life and without fresh and safe drinking water the quality of life deteriorates and earning capacity of people goes down. The project aims at addressing the growing problems of people related to their largest and most important natural resource water.  For ages, the people have been dependent on natural springs (chasmas), the largest source of fresh water, for their drinking water requirements and natural streams for irrigation facilities. However, the tap culture and hand pumps decreased dependence on natural springs. Streams have become seasonal and are drying up. Consequently, these springs and streams were neglected and started drying up. Now the people realize their importance and are willing to restore them to use. Depending on their physical status, these sources will need repair, cleaning and rejuvenation. Natural springs are found in various forms depending on the natural course of water.  They keep the water clean and cool for drinking purposes.  Developing these natural springs requires skilled masonry work keeping in mind the traditional wisdom of people otherwise the water may get diverted or completely lost in earth.We have identified 4 sites where they are in bad shape but with a potential for restoration. Once developed they can be a perennial source of fresh water for these villages. 
 The project will improve the health standards of people due to increased access to safe water and irrigation for crops in the proposed villages by replenishing the water table through water bodies and further harness rainwater by creating infrastructure for storage and irrigation distribution. The village communities will further benefit from agricultural training and inputs to increase crop diversification. The environmental improvements will also have long-lasting impacts, particularly the water table replenishment. This is a highly effective approach to water conservation which heals damaged land that previously could not retain rainwater. Heavy rainfall on parched land causes run-off of soil nutrients as it had become part of an ever-destructive cycle. RUCHI’s philosophy ensures that rather than further extracting what little water remains through installing pumps, it puts infrastructure in place (such as small check dams/crated gully plugs in steep valleys and ravines) that pause the heavy rainfall and let it soak into the ground. The results on the water table and surrounding moisture of the land yielding more farm products can be seen within 24 months.
