“I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Saajha believes in dignity and potential of all parents and works towards building platforms for them to participate in learning of children. Saajha works with parents, primarily mothers, of children studying in government schools, enabling their participation in learning across the four levels of homes, classrooms, schools and communities. We work on instilling confidence in parents, building capabilities of school staff, and work on creating effective processes and systems to facilitate participation. Our work currently impacts about 75 municipal schools in Delhi and about 1,000 schools under the Delhi government through an indirect intervention model. Furthermore, we have also replicated our efforts in Jharkhand (Khunti) and Karnataka (Hubli).

About 50% of the children studying in government schools in Grade V are not able to read text of Grade II. Inability of parents to participate in learning of children is a major reason for poor learning outcomes of children in government schools. There are three major reasons which prevent the participation of parents: lack of confidence in parents, inability of teachers and principals to listen and respond to the parents’ desire to participate in learning, and lack of effective systems and processes which can facilitate participation. More than 90% of the slum children attended government schools in Delhi. The urban slums in Delhi are marked by poor learning outcomes, with an average 7 years of schooling in the age-group of 15+ years and income only a fraction of the state average. Thus, the parents of the children often belong to the marginalised and economically weaker sections of the society. 
 Saajha believes in the potential of all parents, and builds platforms for them to participate in the learning process of their children. The interventions focus on enabling participation in four key areas, namely, home, classroom, school and community. The interventions at home focus on enabling parents, especially mothers, to participate in learning through home-based activities and homework. In classrooms, the focus is on workshops for teachers and assessment of learning. At school level, we enable the parents and the school-staff to jointly prepare a school vision plan and monitor the implementation. At the community level, the focus is on community participation and peer learning. We deploy a four-pronged approach for the delivery of the program – 1.	Building capabilities and confidence of parents to enable them to participate in learning2.	Building capabilities of the school staff to enable them to listen and respond to parents’ need for participation3.	Building effective systems and processes to facilitate parental participation4.	Collating necessary school level data for parents and teachers to collaborate and aid in decision making. For the interventions, we leverage School Management Committees (SMCs) which are mandatory bodies comprising of elected teachers, parents and community members. This makes it a potentially transformational force capable of facilitating parental participation in learning. 
 Saajha measures its impact in two major areas – ability of parents to participate in learning, and improvement in reading capabilities of children. The first is measured through a growth rubric comprising of 60 indicators focusing on parental participation. These indicators cover frequency and quality of parent teacher meeting, implementation of annual plans, frequency of joint audits and community participation in learning. The reading level is measured through standard ASER tools which divide a child's learning capabilities into one of six categories, based on the ability to read a letter, word, paragraph, sentence and story. Over the past three years, we have internally collated and analyzed data around our impact. About 96% of the schools we directly work with have now started recording minutes of parent teacher meetings, and 60% have started preparing data based annual plans. Communities have started participating in learning in 72% of the schools, while 60% of the schools analyse data from joint audit of learning. For reading level, an additional 15% of the children in Grade III, IV and V were able to read texts of Grade II competency as measured in our joint audit of learning.
