The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, no healthcare, no education, there was absolutely nothing”, says Bipin Dhane founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. From the nature-worshipping Bishnoi communities of Rajasthan; the mystical forests of Lord Krishna in Braj; to the animistic tribes of Arunachal, communities across India have been protecting forest fragments called sacred groves in the name of local deities. These ancient forests are linked to an area’s social and religious heritage long before we started exploiting nature as a commodity.Every state of India is dotted with sacred groves, and these safeguarded forests have the potential to save many threatened and endangered species.” With no comprehensive survey ever conducted, estimates suggest that India is home to nearly 100,000-150,000 sacred groves of which only 14,000 have been identified. These fragments of old-growth forests often act as a last refuge for biodiversity.However, these forests are disappearing at an alarming rate due to different human pressures and breakdowns in belief systems. "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" This famous quote by George Berkeley does align with our predicament today. We are unaware of these beautiful and sacred forests and so we remain unaware and detached from their terrible destruction too. 
 Documenting the remaining sacred groves across different states is the first step toward protecting them. Once identified, the Sacred Earth Trust aims to work towards ecological and community-based studies and better protection of these revered lands and help communities reconnect with their natural heritage. It aims to restore the sanctity and biodiversity of these groves by implementing modern conservation practices and preserving community belief systems. We have been working on sacred forest conservation in Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and we would like to expand the scope of the project country-wide. As long as one can sit beneath the cool shade of the ancient trees to listen to the calls of birds, the local people’s songs of reverence, and watch the animals dart between trees, there is hope for revival. 
 Our multi-pronged approach towards Sacred Grove conservation will include documentation, scientific research, and legal protection through which the following impacts are envisioned :•	Sacred Forest lands across different states identified•	Ecological and socio-economic studies conducted•	Legal protection is undertaken with the cooperation of local communities•	Community's cultural history is protected and recognized•	Revival and strengthening of the spiritual connection between communities and nature
