For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The woman I loved and was supposed to marry left me.”Shyam Dev was working in a supplier factory for Hero and Honda when, while operating a power press machine, he got his three right-hand fingers cut off due to a “double stroke” by the faulty machine. After he came to Manesar, Gurugram, to build a future for himself and his family, he got a job in a factory and called his four nephews to work at the same factory too. Sadly, all of them were injured and had their hands and fingers cut off in different accidents at the same factory. Due to these accidents, he’s rendered helpless as now it’s tedious to even do the small tasks of the day like washing himself, cooking, etc. How is he supposed to continue with his life with no money and no fingers? “One shock from a machine changed my whole life,” he says.Safe in India found him during his struggle and fought along with him to get him the insurance and compensation he deserved. He is just one of the 5,000+ injured workers we have assisted to get better ESIC healthcare and/or compensation.

Neetu Devi dreamed of a better future for her kids and took a job at a Maruti supplier factory to get her kids into school. A few months later she met with an accident in the factory where she had 3 fingers cut off. Three such accidents happened in the span of the next 1 year. Due to her disability, she couldn't get a job anywhere else and was forced to work in the same factory for her kids' sake. No pension/ compensation was provided to her. A year later her son left school to help the family meet ends. She fought for insurance for more than a year and to no end. Dreams of generations were ruined here, not just her hands.Safe in India found her during her struggle and could finally get her a pension from ESIC after a tireless fight for another year.She is just one of the 4,000+ injured workers to get better healthcare and/or compensation/pension.
