"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. We are working with women of underprivileged sections of society living in slums and poor inadequate housing conditions. Our work involves motivation and facilitation to these women for formation of their Self- Help Groups. These women are encouraged to raise issues of socio-cultural importance alongside the financial aspect. We focus on skill development of these women by providing them training of sanitary pad making and chikankari work (a traditional embroidery handwork) and marketing. Our goal is to develop a Socio-economic enterprise focusing on the ensuring their livelihood with a sustainable approach. We are working with more than 1000 women and hence exponentially a larger number of their family members. The majority of the women belonging to these groups come from the reserved categories of Indian Constitution and are either unemployed or earn below the minimum wage of INR 200 per day. This pandemic has brought upon the stress of loss of wages, withdrawal symptoms, and uncertainties about the future. It has severely impacted the lives of the daily wagers, migrant workers,unorganized laborers including domestic workers and inadvertently their families. The Corona virus Pandemic has resulted in loss of more than 12.2 crores of Jobs in the Indian subcontinent (data from The Hindu of May 7, 2020). These numbers are don’t truly justify number of unskilled unregistered labor loss. Lack of money and skill set has made people dependent on others for their livelihood and in these troubling times has pushed millions towards the brink of poverty. 
 One of our major targets is Generation of new source of income for the people of our community of daily wagers and domestic workers who have been severely impacted by the pandemic alongside the migrant workers who have returned back to their native towns due to loss of jobs as a result of lockdown in various other states. We want to make people independent by sanctioning them a NO INTEREST RETURNABLE CASH SUPPORT that they can utilize in developing their own self-independent venture. This money will be provided to credible people based on their area of interest and the willingness to start something on their own. The amount will be a NO INTEREST RETURNABLE CASH SUPPORT payable after certain duration in small increments totally to 70 percent of the total loan amount only. The recovered money will be used to help the next set of entrepreneurs. 
 People equipped with the right knowledge and motivation can turn the winds of change in their favor. Monetary and technical support to 70 people to start their own business and then revolving funds to more people upon recovery will encourage innovation and develop multiple small industries in the future.We will start with identification of Beneficiaries. The individuals will be providing complete technical support including training, advocacy, etc. based on their area of interest. We will be actively involved in setting of their ventures via regular monitoring and evaluation.Safe Society has always believed in a sustainable approach and productive repercussions for years to come.We will only take return of 70 percent of the amount and leave the remaining 30 percent with the beneficiary for seed money. The recovered money will help the next set of people. Our regular involvement will ensure their adequate skill development and interventions for their sustainable livelihood.

Nari Shakti - Support the Domestic Worker Women

SAFE is working with the Railways to help out street children engaged in hazardous works which are usually picking rags and collecting bottles from railway tracks. Some of these children are more prone to falling into bad habits. A lot of such children are girls living at railway stations who face a lot of sexual exploitation. Multiple sexual relations are very normal at the railway station, which often leads to sexually transmitted infections and other diseases like HIV and Tuberculosis. Some of the girls become mothers at the tender age of 13-14 years. 
 Our mandate is to support the most underprivileged communities and ensure their well being and freedom. Initially, we thought about the solution to the problem and started the research to understand their problem and probable solution. A meeting with a psychologist, social scientist, children, government agencies and others was conducted to make the strategies about how to work with these children. Finally, we get the Art Based Therapy, which helps the children to open their mind and heal their mental trauma. If we keep in mind their line of thought, we could be able to resolve the issues and get them the opportunity to think about themselves. Its create a safe space in the child to express them freely and work with self. By this therapy, we would be able to develop role-models for the rag-picker community. 
 Since the last five years, Safe has been working tirelessly. So far, we have reunited 524 children who ran away and landed at the railway station, with their families. We also saved 167 children from the clutches of human trafficking. With the railway connected children, we have touched more than 100 children, but the main problem with these children is that they are always on move. In spite of this, we were able to engage 10 children who had completed the age of eighteen into paying jobs. We also have engaged 25+ children in craft training and now they are working with craft for their alternate livelihood. Earlier, they were involved in rag picking and collecting the bottles. The 7 girls we rescued are now involved in making purses, cushions, soft toys, and other materials. These children are now becoming a role model for others. A girl who is physically challenged and very much interested in becoming a professional singer is being supported by us for pursuing her dream. She also has been awarded by the local members of the legislative assembly.
