V. Nagamani is a 34-year old woman living in urban slums of Kurnool city. She was married off at a very young age. Unfortunately her marriage fell apart after few years. Unemployed and parent-less, she had nowhere to go. Her brother provided her shelter but was himself too poor to take care of Nagamani. She was dependent on her brother and sister-in-law for even basic needs like food and clothes. Her's was a highly stigmatized social position and had a profound impact on the way she was being treated by people around her as well as on her own self-esteem.    

SERUDS identified Nagamani while they were working on a Project in Kurnool. The only way to improve her situation and restore her self esteem was to provide her with skills that would help her make an income. Realizing this, SERUDS put her into rehabilitation by enrolling her into our six-month sewing and embroidery programme. Once she had completed the course, she was given a sewing machine as a gift by a local activist to start her own small venture. Now she comfortably earns Rs. 200 a day and lives a life of self-reliance and dignity.

How one sewing maching empowered Nagamani

Kunnamma is a 70-year old woman living in a small house in the slums of Kurnool Andhra Pradesh. Living alone, she had nobody to take care of her, except few charitable neighbours who occasionally provided Kunnamma with food. Her only means of survival was to beg on the streets, and she often went without eating anything at all. Unfortunately, Kunnamma is not the only elderly person suffering in this way.

While running a programme in the area, SERUDS noticed the plight of Kunnammma andwomen like her and initiated the midday meal programme in the area. Between 1-2pm every day we serve 20 elderly people with meals that include rice, eggs and fruits.

Now Kunnamma eats a proper meal every day, and the outlook for the rest of her life no longer seem so bleak.

PROJECT BACKGROUND: Feeding homeless and elderly persons are our one of main objectives of NGO. Helpaged is one of our main goal by feeding them in time food sponsorships. Budhavarapeta slums in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh have a number of disadvantaged elderly people. Many of them don’t have families to support them and resort to begging for food, while others belong to families where the adult members go off to work leaving them alone at home. Not only do they struggle with the absence of any social and economic security, but with lack of reasonable nutrition as well. These Elderly persons are spending their time at community halls, grave yard, neighbour houses. 30 neglected old age persons are benefiting from this midday meal program. This project will train 150 poor women and teach them valuable sewing skills. It will also provide each woman with her own treadle sewing machine, allowing her to earn a living from home to support her family.Challenge: To a struggling woman or girl in countries like India, the sewing machine you provide can be the doorway to a better life. You’ll help a single mother, orphaned teen, or widow feel the dignity of providing for herself and her family. In India, more than 50 per cent of women are illiterate. Living in poverty with a limited education greatly obstructs these women from finding quality jobs to support their families. They are often at risk of being trapped in dehumanizing professions (like the sex trade) in order to feed their children. This project will empower poor women in rural villages with valuable sewing skills and a sewing machine so they can earn a respectable living and help their families.Solution: The women will attend a sewing machine tailoring centre and get 6 months of training, where they will develop their sewing skills and learn about basic business practices. Once a woman graduates from the tailoring program, she will receive her own treadle (foot powered) branded sewing machine. She will be able to start her own tailoring business from home and earn a daily income that can provide food and basic necessities for the whole family.Long-Term Impact: The project will empower 150 women each year with sewing skills and provide them with a sewing machine to start their own self-sustaining tailoring business. The majority of the population in Andhra Pradesh live in villages and depend on the agriculture to make an income. Average farm sizes of around 2-3 acres and complete dependence on rain makes cultivation an unreliable and limited source of income. The situation gets worse for women who are further marginalised by gender discrimination and the division of social classes.Our aim is to empower disadvantaged women by providing livelihood opportunities to create a stable source of income. We conducted a survey in the region and identified 250 women who were willing to learn new skills to earn money. These women are being provided with free three-month-long vocational courses in subjects such as sewing and embroidery.On completion of training, all students would be given a new sewing machine so they can begin their own small enterprise.This program hopes to both enlighten deprived women and financially support their otherwise poor families.
