This has become a practice in today's society that money comes first and everything else later,” says Winnie whose Maitri India, rescues widowed mothers from the streets of Vrindavan.Many widowed elderly mothers often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. Most of Sharanalayam’s children have ‘V’ as their initial. The ‘V’ stands for ‘Vanitha,’ the founder of the NGO. For the orphaned and the abandoned kids, Vanitha is simply ‘Thaiamma’ (mother). One of them is V Dhanushya, 18, who is studying nursing. “Thaiamma has taken care of me since I was six months old. Vanitha has also been taking care of abandoned HIV-infected and mentally challenged kids. Today, over 80 abandoned kids are given shelter, food, medical care, education and other amenities at Sharanalayam.Vanitha has tried her best to run Sharanalayam from her own resources and that of her well-wishers, but the last two years have been harsh. “I have never extended my hands asking people to donate, but I have to do it now for the sake of the children under my care,” says Vanitha. It had seven children. The first child to be brought to Sharanalayam was a baby of four, who was mentally challenged, and her mother chained the daughter when she went out to work.When Vanitha came to know about this child, she went to inquire and saw that the baby was in a horrible state. She promised the mother that she would take care of the baby. “The baby hardly had any strength. She used to be called ‘insect’ by the people in the neighbourhood. The doctor said that she might not survive beyond a month. But she did for over a year, under my care. I named her Shakthi,” recalls Vanitha.Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many have become professionals in various fields, including medical care, engineering, counselling, banking, etc.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of 80 children under its care. Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

Violence against women in India is an issue rooted in societal norms and economic dependence. Discriminatory practices are underlined by laws favoring men. Inadequate policing and judicial practices deny female victim's proper protection and justice. The problem is aggravated when legal systems do not treat it as a crime, but rather as a "private" family matter. The factors of violence against women include entrenched unequal power relations, patriarchal mindset, societal norms, economic dependency, lack of education, lack of knowledge and access to redressal mechanisms. 
 Ongoing efforts of the organization includes individual case work, case counseling, referrals, legal aid, shelter, rehabilitation, filing for maintenance, group counseling, partner counseling, accompany the survivor to institutes etc. Group work includes gender sensitization training, community awareness programs, street plays, youth awareness programs, training of trainers, community leaders, health workers. Community intervention: women’s rallies, mass awareness programs at state level, diocesan level, training workshops for directors and key stake holders, preparation of support groups of victims and survivors of violence. We also conduct several campaigns/workshops like raising awareness at market places, railways, hospitals, educational institutions. 
 The project envisages increasing women’s access to justice by protecting and promoting the welfare and rights of women and girls who suffer as a result of violence perpetrated against them. The objective is to support individual women survivors of violence to access justice; change attitudes in communities towards violence against women; and ensure that all women understand their rights; how to claim them and that those who have a responsibility to protect and promote those rights do so. This will be done by using a number of strategies including counselling, specific awareness raising activities with different community stakeholders.
