“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many have come on their own. But life has become a bit difficult now. It started with taking care of children in difficult conditions. It slowly started taking care of mentally challenged women. Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children and women being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Our journey is guided by the belief that true progress and human flourishing can only be achieved when every individual, regardless of their abilities or neurodivergent traits, is given the opportunity to shine and contribute to the rich tapestry of our global communityOur ProgramsHealth<ol><li>Early Intervention: Therapies such as Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, speech therapy, Vision therapy, sensory integration, special education, applied behavioral analysis, hydrotherapy, and group therapy are provided to Children with Disabilities in the age group between 0 to 12 years and caregivers are empowered to provide activities at home and aim of the program is ensure inclusion into schools.</li><li>Infant Screening Program: babies and infants are screened are Government hospitals and Primary health centers to identify 4 Ds - Disability, Development delay, defects, and disease in Children. The program aims to ensure children are identified early and early intervention is begun to ensure the child has maximal functional independence.</li><li>Women Wellness Initiative: Raising awareness for pregnant women's health to take medications, and regular health check-ups.</li></ol>Education Programs:<ol><li>Pre-Vocational Skills: Teaching practical skills to children above 12 years of age to ensure they can be independent in their livelihood by the time they turn 18 years old.</li><li>Inclusive education - Capacity building the teachers with various teaching strategies to accommodate Children with Disability in the classroom and ensure accessibility of the school.</li><li>NIOS Partnership: We partner with NIOS-affiliated institutions to ensure our children are eligible to get a degree of their capacity to ensure livelihood.</li></ol>Livelihood Program:<ul><li>NutriSip: Women with Disabilities and caregivers manufacture milled-based nutrition powder and in this program, we strive to make caregivers financially independent and contribute to the family ensuring enhanced quality of living.</li></ul>Capacity Building and Sensitization Program - We organize regular sensitization and capacity building programs for all the relevant stakeholders including Government, community, and Corporations to ensure inclusion is a lived reality.
