Mumbai’s slums occupy 6% of the city's land but are home to 54% of its population. Family incomes are less than Rs. 8,000 a month. Uncertain and fluctuating incomes typically force children, in particular girls, out of the school system as soon as they are deemed capable of contributing to the family income or multiple domestic chores. The absolute poverty has deterred the pursuit of formal education as it is not deemed a high priority as compared to other basic necessities.Abysmally low levels of quality education in the local public schools with no competent assistance, generationally illiterate parents, sheer lack of physical space needed to allow children to be curious, creative and intelligent, further compounds the problem. 9 out of 10 of India’s most disadvantaged children who grow up in Mumbai’s slums drop out of school, face the risk of child labour and substance abuse, tobacco in particular. Every day, more than 5,500 children in India below the age of 15 are estimated to try tobacco for the first time. Project Résumé helps children broaden their vision by highlighting the importance of studying and providing enriching life experiences. The program helps children make informed decisions, equips them with necessary life skills, and teaches them vocational skills for sustainable careers. All this is achieved through engaging child-friendly programmes in arts, sports, media, and skill-training.Project Résumé gives children the means to earn part-time as they study, increase self-esteem, build confidence, shape them into role models for younger children in their communities and encourage them to stay in school.Project Résumé consists of the Academy of Sports, Arts and Media, and the skills@school programme. These programmes are known to build self-worth of the child by providing a platform for mentorship and skill development, to achieve a productive life marked by aspiration, achievement and economic self-sufficiency.The program enables children to achieve personal and economic empowerment through experiential platforms of learning such as Sports, Arts, Media and Vocational Skills. Each child enrolled will complete specific training for skills across Cricket, Hockey (sports), Dance, Music, Theatre (arts) or Beauty &amp; Wellness; Hospitality, Retail Management, Home Appliance Repair, Tailoring, Mobile Repairing and Computer Hardware (Vocational). Each child enrolled will complete a minimum of 120 and a maximum of 150 training hours by opting-in to either of these specific career pathways.  Listing below two key objectives of implementing Project Résumé at the school level:To ensure the child stays in schoolThe primary objective of Project Résumé is to motivate under-privileged children studying in the Government run high schools to complete their basic education till Class 12 (High School). With exposure to world-class training and performance opportunities, the program makes school an attractive choice for children and their families, promoting higher retention rates at the school level.Through the introduction of Vocational Skills, children are provided with the opportunity to learn an additional skill that will help them earn a livelihood while still pursuing their education. Platforms such as Project Résumé enable the child to express themselves, find their voice, get noticed and discover themselves for the first time.To prepare the children for higher education or relevant employment opportunities in futureProject Résumé provides children with the opportunity to develop skills that enable them to enhance their ability to earn a higher income, besides unlocking avenues for further education. The goal is to use innovative and engaging tools of education to leverage unused potential of underserved youth and their families, who would otherwise drop out of school to pursue low paying unskilled jobs or early marriage.Through each program, be it Arts, Sports, Media or Vocational Skills, the students are trained to be workplace ready where desirable life skills such as reliability, confidence, communication, team work, self-determination, and leadership are imparted. These programs also actively work toward reducing the skill gap that would later affect the child’s ability to secure a sustainable job.

Impact Shruti is a student of Andheri (W) English Medium School. She is also a **second year student at the Salaam Bombay Media Academy.** Her father is an Electrician and her mother, a housemaid. Shruti grew up in Hyderabad, speaking Telegu. **When she moved to Mumbai with her parents, she couldn't speak, write or understand Hindi. This made it difficult for her to make friends,** perform in class or take part in any group activities. This made Shruti a loner and she had no one except her mother for company.**The Media Academy focused on her written and spoken language skills** while exposing her to photography, photojournalism etc. by planning visits for her to the printing press, and other places. Her grit and determination resulted in her picking up the language quite fast. Her efforts showed in her academics and she was awarded as the Best Student of the Year, last year. With the help of Salaam Bombay Media Academy, she worked on her skills and today, she is an avid Photographer. Started in 2002, their objective is to empower children to overcome the obstacles of the environment they live in. Salaam Bombay, seeks to increase their self-esteem, build their self-confidence, develop their vocational life-skills through arts, sports and media to create positive role models. Children can make the right choices if they are given access to the right information and the life skill tools to deal with adverse situations. SBT also wants to safeguard the next generation from tobacco. For which, they conduct awareness and advocacy programs on tobacco. The Media Academy is an in-school three-year comprehensive training program, which initiates children into Journalism, communication and Photography. The Media Academy provides children with an alternate skill that further enhances their career opportunities. The objectives of the academy are:To train children in Journalism, communication and other forms of mediaTo provide children with an alternate skill to enhance their career opportunitiesTo develop life skills such as reading, writing, effective communication, team building, personality development, confidence and creative thinking, amongst othersSBF works in 12 schools and 375 students. The students are recruited for the first year of the academy through a writing and oral test followed by one on one interview. Around 20 students per school are selected from each school for this training. These selected students are given a three-year training in the academy completely free of cost. They are motivated to express their inner self. The training is imparted as per a pre-designed module and curriculum set for the purpose, along with various exposure visits including visits to electronic media houses, radio stations. They are helped with guest lectures, participation in special courses held across Mumbai, etc. The module is imparted by trained Salaam Bombay facilitators. The Media Academy provides experiential learning in the form of a newsletter, Voice of Halla Bol, written and edited by the children, for the children. About The NGO Salaam Bombay Foundation (SBF) was founded in 2002 with the philosophy and belief that the only way to invest in the nation's future is to invest in its children and in their health and education. Children also need to be guarded from risks to their health, especially tobacco which has a high prevalence in children and youth. SBF is focused on engaging Mumbai's most vulnerable "at risk" children through in-school programmes (leadership and advocacy) and after-school academies (skill building) that help build their confidence, self-esteem and commit them to stay in school while staying tobacco-free. Salaam Bombay's vocational development academies help children to contribute to fluctuating family incomes and encourage their families to continue their education while planning for a stable future. Their programmes started from 230 schools in Mumbai and grew to over 15,000 schools in Maharashtra alone training over 60,000 teachers. They have now sown seeds in 5 states across India.Padmini Sekhsaria has a B.A in Economics from Sophia College, Mumbai and MSc. in Financial Economics from the University of London, U.K. She is an alumnus of the London School of Economics and London Business School. Padmini Sekhsaria has been active in health programs, particularly cancer and tobacco control for over two decades. She is the vision behind Salaam Bombay Foundation that she founded in 2002, working with more than 2.9 million children across Maharashtra alone making it the largest preventive program in tobacco control in India.

Salaam Bombay Foundation (SBF) believes that “An adolescent in school has a future”, and it is with this mission that the foundation began its operations in 2002. At the core of all of Salaam Bombay’s initiatives is the commitment to empower India’s most vulnerable adolescents to stay in school and make the right choices for health, education and livelihood. Since its inception till April 2019, Salaam Bombay Foundation has reached more than 550,000 adolescents aged 11 to 17 years in 300 public schools across Mumbai, out of which 250,000 are girls. The Foundation’s work is made possible by leveraging the existing government school infrastructure and combining it with alternate and innovative education tools. Today Salaam Bombay operates in all the regions of India in the key cities of Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Jaipur.

The team consists of 3 young boys - Aaditya S Pingale, Parashram R Pingal, Abhijeet C Pawar , and their two mentors. These 15 years olds are currently studying in Madyamik Vidyalay, Awankhed, which is near Nashik. They belong to families whose main source of income comes from Farming and it is heartwarming to see them work towards a bot that helps their family. We are inspired by their work and look forward to supporting them in FLL.
