“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. ​'Samaaveshi Pathshaala Foundation’ is a registered nonprofit working on inclusive education in Karjat tribal block of Maharashtra, approx 60 km from Mumbai, founded in 2018 by two graduates of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. Our mission is to build 'inclusive classrooms' where all children irrespective of their social background or disability study together.Starting with an inclusive kindergarten from a two-room rented space in Kashele village, we gradually expanded our operations to include a 'Community library/disability resource centre' to improve literacy and life skills among rural children; and a six-month 'Inclusive Anganwadi Teacher-training' on early disability identification and inclusive education skills with small clusters of local Anganwadi teachers. Currently, we're working with a network of 100 Anganwadis (out of total 300), with an aim to build an ecosystem of inclusive education in Karjat block where all key stakeholders believe in the idea of inclusion, and have necessary skills and resources to practice inclusive education.Post-COVID pandemic, we're working with a 'whole-system approach' an to implement inclusive education practices at all seven Anganwadis and five Zilla Parishad (ZP) primary schools situated under five villages of Kashele gram panchayat, impacting educational experiences of 150+ preschool children and 350+ primary students, including 16 children with disabilities.In 2025, Samaaveshi plans to set-up a two-storey 'Inclusive Learning &amp; Disability Resource Centre (ILDRC)' on a 16-guntha (17,000 sq ft) land in Kashele village, Karjat, acquired in 2024. The ILDRC is a strategic project of Samaaveshi aimed at providing long-term stability and expansion of its early disability intervention, teacher-training and inclusive education services across 200 villages in Karjat tribal block of Maharashtra. 'Samaaveshi Pathshaala' is an inclusive school situated in Kashele village (Karjat) where all children with and without disabilities study together in the same classroom, using multi-sensory learning approach. For the last two years, we’re operating our school from a 4-room rented space with a small playground in Kashele village. At present, we have total 30 students (15 each in LKG and UKG), including 10 children with disability, study together using multi-sensory learning approach. However, there’s no space for expansion in the current rented location; and we needed to find a solution as we plan to increase one grade every academic year. Recently, in return of our COVID-19 relief work for the tribal communities in Karjat, we received 2 acres of land as a gift from the local community in Kashele village. This kind gesture from the locals has brought us one step closer to realizing our dream of building our own inclusive school infrastructure, one that will fulfil all our short-term and long-term goals of becoming 'a specialized centre for inclusive education' - and impact learning outcomes of over 1 million children with diverse learning needs across India by 2030.  Our plan is to build ‘inclusive school’ infrastructure for primary level, following all principles of universal design. The current school construction plan comprises of total five classrooms, a community library-cum-resource room, an inclusive training (skilling) centre, and 4 disabled-friendly toilets - all to be built following principles of universal design. The total cost of this construction project is estimated at Rupees 20 LAKH. Our timeline is:a)   Complete land agreement by Sep 2020b)   Fundraising/crowdfunding from Sep to Dec 2020c)   Start school construction in early Jan 2021d)   End construction by May-June 2021e)   Begin new academic year from the new school premises from June-July 2021.
