“I saw a girl, barely 7 or 8, being pushed into flesh trade. Her cries for help still echo in my ears. There were men as old as 60 r*ping the innocent child. It was the passionate appeal of a child in the year 1991, wanting to go to school that prompted the founder of this project Mamoon Akhtar to start teaching 5-6 children in his own house in the Tikiapara slum.As the residents of the area became aware of this “school”, more and more children started coming and there was no place to seat them.Mission is to provide developmental opportunities to the poor and needy slum children with emphasis on young girls. Also; provide them with quality education and to impart life skill education, so as to explore and develop their hidden talents and capacities.To train them for secured livelihood so as to lead productive and fruitful life with self-esteem and self-dignity and to rise above the narrow consideration of caste creed, community religion or language and to build a strong nation.

SHM started in 1999 in the slums of Tikiapara of Howrah district. The basic aim was to save the children of this slum from falling prey to the drug mafia and getting involved in nefarious activities like bootlegging, drug peddling, smuggling and prostitution through quality education by the means of preparatory, non-formal and formal schools. Also; through generating employment opportunities for the deprived girls and women through its vocational training and skill development projects to end poverty. The focus of SHM is not only to provide education but also to mentor these children to become productive citizen of the future. 
 SHM started Illiteracy Elimination Program which has been transformed into a formal school in the name of Samaritan Mission School (SMS). The school is recognized by the Education Department, Government of West Bengal and affiliated to West Bengal Board of Primary Education. The school is also affiliated to West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, Government of West Bengal for Classes V to VIII. The school provides high quality education and IT training from Nursery to Class VIII for the underprivileged children of Tikiapara slum. 
 The Illiteracy Elimination Project has direct impact on 1560 underprivileged children of the community who are the first generation literate. The Computer Literacy Project has trained more than 4000 youths of the slum. The mentality of students have been effected by regular efforts of SHM in the form of assessments, exposure visits, seminars, awareness camps, rallies, participating in various competitions and meeting with prominent personalities apart from quality education. Such activities help slum children in developing humanitarian values and distinguishing the Do's and Dont's.
