“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, 250 of the children rescued from abuse and exploitation are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. Samarthanam Trust For The Disabled

Akulethi Ramesh is 21 and lives in Ananthpur District, Andhra Pradesh, with his underprivileged family.

As the second male member, he was expected to support the financial needs of his family. Once he completed his PUC he moved to Bangalore to work in a Plywood shop in order to do this.

One day on his way home from work he was in a horrible road accident which resulted in the loss of his left leg. His whole life came to a shuddering halt, conjuring up the question: how would he support his family with this new disability?

A friend of his referred him to Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, where he was given counselling and encouraged to see this as simply a new challenge. We guided him to pursue higher education and enrolled him into our computer training programme for vocational skills.

Ramesh is now in college and has completed the computer training course at Samarthanam with great marks. He also receives an allowance of Rs. 500 every month to continue his studies and support his accommodation.

Today, Ramesh is positive about his future and eager to work within banking after his graduation.

A banker’s future for Ramesh

Thirteen-year-old Shrikanth, belongs to a deprived family living in a small district of Bangalore. His father is an auto driver while his mother sells flowers to make ends meet for the family. Despite their disadvantaged background, his parents were determined to send their son to a nearby government aided school.

However, due to their humble finances, his parents couldn’t always care for Shrikanth’s nutritional needs as a growing child. Poor nutrition can result in major deficiency related diseases in children, leading to a physical disability.

Without access to good food, it also indirectly affected Shrikanth’s school work and extracurricular activities as well as his attendance. Therefore, hindering his academic progression.

Our midday meals programme, Vidyaprasad, was introduced at Shrikanth’s school and within 2-3 months his attendance and performance has dramatically improved. He has also resumed his interest in his favourite sport Volleyball.

His future aspirations include becoming an engineer and helping his parents to improve their standard of living.

Shrikanth said of the programme: “Midday meals, supplied by Samarthanam, are very nice and have been helpful to me because I come from a poor family background. They don’t have lots of money to provide me with nutritious food. But somehow, I am blessed to have nutritious food everyday in school.”

Tajjumunnissa, 21, from Bangalore, struggles with her sight. She comes from a poor family and has five sisters who have either been married off at an early age or work in order to support their family.

Tajjumunnissa, is a spirited young girl with a zest for life that suggested to us she would easily defeat the odds and go on to become a successful woman. She is in her second year of her Bachelor of Arts degree and excels in her academics.

Samarthanam Trust for Disabled has thoroughly supported her from the beginning. Right from providing her education until she completed class 12, to guiding her into her higher studies.

The centre also identified her skills in extra-curricular activities and encouraged her to pursue them. Today, she frequently participates in singing, dancing and debating competitions, and has won several prizes.

In relation to Samarthanam, Tajjumunnissa said: “The centre has helped me alot with financial assistance, tutors, providing stationery and accommodation, and also counselling me in choosing my career path. I am extremely grateful for this support.”

23% of the children in India are born underweight. India also has the largest development programme, and yet the progress on malnutrition is limited, causing most major disabilities among children. 
 We run a midday meal programme in over 123 government schools in Bangalore for children up to grade 5 as a preventive measure against malnutrition.Not only does this help to fulfil these children’s nutritional requirements, it also encourages them to attend schools more regularly. 
 Around 35,000 children studying in over 123 government schools will benefit from this project. You can positively impact a child’s life by donating just a small amount.

There are 40 to 80 million disabled people in India. Getting a job remains a challenge for them as most disabled children aren’t given the chance to complete their primary education. 
 We run two schools in Bangalore where around 600 children receive free education. We also provide hostel facilities for those who live too far away from the centre to travel to.To ensure children are nutritionally balanced, we administer healthy meals every day. Moreover, we provide special educational supplies, including Braille books, and medical staff are always on hand to offer support.Both schools are recognised by the state government and focus on giving disabled children skills for their own self-reliance and independence. 
 This project will sponsor the education of 600 disadvantaged children suffering from disabilities in Bangalore. Your generosity can go a long way to helping these children.

Catering to disadvantaged disabled children’s educational needs

- Lack of Sporting Activities for the Visually Impaired.United Nations has estimated that there are 39 million blind people across the globe, and 7.8 million blind people across India, of which about 80% live in remote and isolated villages. These visually impaired citizens are often sidelined from mainstream society. Our society also lacks accessible infrastructure and services to accommodate the visually impaired. However, a sport is a vocation that enables the visually impaired to develop independence, confidence, social skills, responsibility, leadership qualities, and livelihood skills. It changes the common perception of persons with disabilities by directing attention on their ability rather than disability. While sports has value in everyone's life, it is even more critical in the life of a visually impaired. This is because of the rehabilitative influence sport can have not only on the physical body but also on rehabilitating people with a disability into society. 
 - Organize Cricket for the Blind, a visually impaired version of the mainstream cricket. It is towards achieving this objective that Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled instituted Cricket Association for the Blind (CABI), the apex body that organizes and conducts Cricket for the Blind (C4B) across India, is working right now. Cricket for Blind is a project that focuses on the all-round development of a visually impaired person. Besides providing coaching on blind cricket, Cricket for Blind also focuses on developing the confidence, independence, mobility and other required and necessary skills of a visually impaired person. 
 - An independent and self-reliant visually impaired person and community.A successful blind cricketer is an inspiration for the whole disabled community as well as for the non-disabled community. Success stories like that of the Padmashri Awardee Shekhar Naik, National Award winner Prakash Jairamaiaha, are just a few examples of the impact that this project has had on many visually impaired individuals. So far, we have been able to impact more than 10000 blind cricketers through this project, helping them to build themselves, gain employment and lead purposeful lives.

The Blind Spo(r)t- CRICKET FOR BLIND 

In this day and age, being computer literate is one of the most important skills to have when seeking a secure job. Finding employment remains a struggle for disabled people, especially when they come from economically disadvantaged communities. 
 We help disabled youths get jobs by training them in a variety of computer programmes and Digital Accessible Information Systems (DAISY). These are short term courses that keep them abreast with current technological developments and broaden their options for employment.In addition, communication skills and English speaking courses are also taught to improve their chances of employment. 
 Children in rural areas have little exposure to computers and technology so we train around 120 people under this programme. With your help, we could reach many more.
