I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. The area of operation of Samatha comes under rural. The majority of the people who live here are illiterate and daily wage laborer. Most of the children parents are illiterate and below poverty line, Children not having nutritious food, not having proper clothes and they are not able to follow the teachers lessons as parents are not able to give their time and followup their children studies after coming from school. So many of the children are dropout from school due to not able to follow lessons in school and to support their families financially.
