“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, 250 of the children rescued from abuse and exploitation are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. Samerth Charitable Trust works with vulnerable communities - empowering them to gain access to their social and economic rightsSamerth Charitable Trust, also referred to as Samerth was founded to capacitate people and institutions so that they can live a life of dignity. Samerth actively started working in 2001 in Kutch District, Gujarat as a response to the devastating earthquake at that time. The earthquake left several individuals either maimed, homeless or without their families. Samerth initiated support through building houses, facilitating health facilities, providing safe and clean drinking water &amp; promoting education. The Kutch program has now evolved to work extensively on participatory ground water management, reviving ponds and wells, building rain roof water harvesting structures. Over the years the Kutch Program has impacted approximately 50,000 lives directly and ensuring a 25% drop in distressed migration, a huge issue in the area.In 2002, we expanded our work in Ahmedabad during the distressing riots that shook Gujarat. The focus once again was on marginalised and vulnerable communities. We worked with children &amp; adults with special needs, on early education and leadership development among women of the local communities. Today, the Ahmedabad program runs a day care and vocational centre for over 86 children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, providing them access to daily therapies such as physio, speech and psychotherapy. They are also given regular consultations with specialists, an individualised education plan (IEP) is developed for all along with providing vocational training to young adults. The team also works with 13 government schools &amp; community centres on enhancing education in the foundation years, reaching out to more than 1500 children. In 2006, the Samerth team moved its focus to Chhattisgarh and began working with the PVTGs (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups) like the Baiga tribal community in Bilaspur district. The program now has spread across 8 other districts and works on education, water management, livelihoods and community empowerment with primitive tribal groups. Our USP : Samerth works with unreached and marginalised communities by ensuring their entitlements are met through education opportunities, natural resource management and promoting livelihoods. We believe in collaborating with government programmes for wider reach and impact.

Samerth works with the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in the small hamlets of Rapar and Bhachau blocks of Kutch, Gujarat. In the last 2 decades we have reached out to 12,000 families by supporting revival of their traditional water-based assets to meet up the need of drinking and irrigation needs. Many families who have had to migrate in search of work have stopped. In some cases, the number of days the families have to stay out for work has reduced. The irrigation facilities enabled them to take on plantation of two crops and 4,000 families were able buy diesel pumps, threshers and in few cases tractors to cultivate their agricultural fields.  COVID and its impact on children education: Samerth in the COVID times has been working with the families initially by providing immediate support in terms of food grains, linking up with MGNREGA work, water supply through tankers in summers and nutritional support to children and pregnant and lactating mothers. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on girls’ education specifically are numerous and diverse. The schools remain closed, affecting girls’ education directly. We are afraid that the impact of the pandemic will be high number of dropouts and longer-term outcomes will be frightening for girls’ and boys’ education as well. The impact of COVID-19 on education could erase decade of effort that Samerth’s team has put in to see that the children attend school regularly to ensure gender equality in education especially at the basic level.   
 Samerth has set up 32 centers across Rapar &amp; Bachau blocks, where the children have no access to support system to continue their education online or by attending classes on television. Also, these children are first generation learners and therefore the parents are also unable to provide support in monitoring their work. We need help in supporting educators (1 educator for 2 centres) who will be from the same community and in charge of support classes as per age appropriate learning and nutrition to each child. The communities have provided the space in their courtyard and Samerth will be manage, honorarium for educators, training material, and regular trainings of the educators and handholding them throughout the process. In the long term, education support will help us develop follow-up plans with families to ensure girls and boys return to school once res restrictions are eased. Samerth team has also involved government school teachers and they are happy to share the Pragnya (curriculum) and provide support to the parents as well. During the year the educators will run classes so that the children get extra support to cope up whatever they have lost in the entire year. The children are grouped according to their age and class. Awareness campaigns are conducted to encourage families to continue supporting education. Samerth’s educators will act as link between the government school teachers and children by accessing information, teaching material and making sure that the children of higher class who need support are catered to by them.  
 1.     Increase Children’s learning levels and 832 children continue to get academic support from the 32 centers2.   Reach out to at least 500 girls ensuring that they are not forced to take up household and childcare work and avert the risk of gender-based violence and early marriages issues are addressed.3.    An understanding and inculcate habit of personal hygiene and cleanliness4.     We hope to overcome exacerbating inequalities brought on by the pandemic in education with at least 700 parents of the 50 villages of marginalised groups children.5.   Bring collaboration between government agencies, education department and schools for better coordination with the children from the far-flung villages and hamlets.

It is estimated that there are about 10.92 lakh persons with disabilities in Gujarat alone. From its establishment in 2007, today we have been instrumental in bringing hope in the lives of more than 300 children &amp; young adults along with their families . Samerth Talim Kendra (STK) – was established in 2007, 5 years after Samerth Trust started its operations in Ahmedabad. There had been a long standing demand for the kendra in the operational area covering Juhapura (encompassing Makarba Vejalpur &amp; Sarkhej areas). It is a ghettoized area with poor civil amenities and lack of infrastructure. Samerth works with marginalized and disadvantaged communities living in slums and shanties.While working with children and young adults with disabilities in the community, the Samerth team recognised that girls face a double disability! They not only have to cope with the development or intellectual disabilities they have but also face a major socio-cultural barrier. Parents are reluctant to send these girls outside of the fear of abuse, plus there is very little motivation to invest in time and resources to ensure they receive the appropriate services. Thus the ratio of girls to boys availing such services is always low. Therefore Samerth has made a conscious move through its work to bridge this gap, ensure that these girls are provided the services that will bring a positive impact in their lives. 
 The centre is currently helping 86 children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to receive therapies by trained and qualified professionals. Along with support for these children, Samerth is also ensuring access to education and rehabilitation training where these children and young adults can learn to live independent. Independent living skills include developing skills to clean and bathe themselves, dress and groom like any other individual. Once they reach their full potential young adults are also given vocational training to help them gain financial independence. Overall Objectives of the Programme are:<ol><li>Continue to support children &amp; young adults with disability in the community with special focus on girl child.</li><li>Ensure that each child receives therapies (Physio/Speech/Sensory/Psycho) and undergoes regular checkup (ENT/neuro paediatric) based on her /his needs .</li><li>Ensure the identified children receive Centre-based and/ or Home-based services by leveraging technology keeping in mind the Covid Pandemic situation</li><li>Build capacity of staff to work with children with disability specific to COVID times</li><li>Create awareness regarding COVID pandemic and develop a strategy to support the therapies/and use of technology </li><li>Ensure that children with disabilities receive nutrition by providing dry ration kits</li><li>Continue Home based individual education plans with personalised education kit</li></ol> 
 The impact of the existing project has begun to bring change in the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and also their families thus providing for a strong foundation for the proposed project interventions.Impact<ol><li>The project is able to provide services and make 100 children independent to the extent possible</li><li>Creating a team of local people and exposing them to various training and experts from the field leading to capacity building of the community that has high incidence of disability.·</li><li>Nutrition requirements of 100 children are met through the year.</li><li>Continued education and home based intervention to ensure no regression in behaviour, learnings and development dur to limited access to centre facilities due to ongoing covid situation</li></ol>
