I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. Knowledge Empowers and Happiness Heals...Our vision and belief is driven by the high success rate of childhood cancer treatment (nearly 78% as per the pediatric oncology cohort). Founded in Bangalore in 2009 by Sandhya Sharad, Samiksha Foundation (SF) provides non-medical support to children with cancer, focusing on Integrated Education of the child during treatment at oncology hospital wards.In an effort to “leave no child behind”, Samiksha’s mission is to enhance formal education of children with cancer, and now expanding the scope of that mission to include other life limiting conditions. SF has done this using a hybrid of hands on and technology enabled remote support. Our focus has been helping the children to return to the right grade in their school post-cancer recovery.Samiksha has awarded 306 scholarships, till January 2022, to support aspiring young cancer survivors with their higher studies.SF has impacted over 8590 children (direct beneficiaries), across 5 Learning Centres from June 2012 until May 2022.
