For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Veero's story at Anandam, part of the Sapna NGO network, illustrates the transformative power of dedicated care and medical support. At 52, she was transferred from another center to Anandam, Vijay Mandir, with significant health challenges, including impaired mobility and memory loss. Upon arrival, she struggled with basic movements and had no recollection of her past, including her home and family. The attentive care provided by Anandam's social workers, along with the medical guidance from healthcare professionals, laid the foundation for her recovery journey. A physiotherapist was brought in to work with Veero, focusing on exercises to improve her mobility. This tailored rehabilitation plan, emphasizing both physical and nutritional care, has led to notable improvements in her condition. Within just two months, Veero has regained the ability to walk without assistance and manage her daily activities independently, marking a significant milestone in her recovery. Although memory issues persist, preventing her from remembering her family, she has found a new sense of belonging and happiness within the nurturing environment of Anandam. This progress underscores the impact of Sapna's work, offering not just shelter but also a comprehensive care system that fosters recovery and independence for its residents. However, the ongoing challenge of funding remains a hurdle for extending such care to more individuals in need. The aged and infirm are abandoned and left to their own devices by the people they are supposed to trust most - their own family. Sapna has taken it upon itself to rehabilitate the lives of those who have no one else to rely on. Our donors have allowed us to sponsor the lifestyle of 110 abandoned elderly in their shelter home " Anandam" between January and September, 2023. Your money has helped pay the costs of two beneficiaries who are in a coma, as well as the funeral rites for another two who have passed on. Sapna uses your funds to maintain the lifestyle of its beneficiaries by - <ul><li>providing shelter to the homeless</li><li>taking care of medicines, treatments, and essential healthcare services 24x7</li><li>giving daily meals to take care of beneficiaries nutritional requirements</li><li>providing social support to address psychological needs</li><li>facilitating the reunion of their beneficiaries with their families. Till date over 600 beneficiaries have been reunited.</li></ul> Anandam is even attempting to build a new building in their compound which would drastically increase their capacity by a staggering 140! Education is a key factor for a healthy, productive, and equal society. The national average female illiteracy rate (age 15 and older) stands at 45.5% compared to 23.1% for men (UNPFC). In Rajasthan, 56% of women are illiterate compared to 23% of men. Girls’ enrollment in Rajasthan is dismal. Rajasthan has 9 of the 26 most backward districts in India. The Literacy rate of Alwar district is 70.72%. The literacy rate among males was 83.75% and among females were 56.25%. Alwar district of Rajasthan comprises the Mewat region. The literacy rate of Meo Muslims in this region is meagre. As per 2001 census the literacy rate of Meo Muslims in Alwar district is 30.12%. The attendance rate of girls in school in the age of 6 to 8 years is only 36.8%. The literacy rate among Meo-Muslims was as low as 23.54% in 2011, with a negligible female literacy rate of 6.15% (The Alwar Mewat Institute of Education and Development).We at SAPNA believe that education of girls is essential for the equitable advancement of society. Improvements in girl’s education benefit the status of the family and empower women. In this background, SAPNA has established a pre-primary school named ‘SAPNA Shikshalaya’. 
 SAPNA started a pre-primary school named SAPNA Shikshalaya in 2015 which presently, in 2019, has extended till primary school. The aim of the school was to provide 'quality, flexible and relevant learning' and targets girls from poor backgrounds in the adjoining rural belt. The program is envisaged to empower girls from poor and marginalized backgrounds with capability, freedom and choice to follow their dream. The program nurtures the overall development of the girls. This entails hygiene, discipline, punctuality, nutrition and overall turnout, in addition to learning and personality development.In this academic year (2019 – 20), 160 girls have enrolled in the school. A well-designed curriculum focuses on developing the verbal and written skills of the students. Our student-teacher ratio is 15:1 i.e. we have 1 teacher looking after 15 students. Use of teaching aids such as a ‘Smart Class’ enables the children to learn pre-writing and pre-reading concepts. For overall and quality development of teachers, time to time training is organized for their capacity building.The school provides girls with uniform, books, stationery and nutrition. Girls are provided healthy food in school to overcome nutritional deprivation that often exists due to poverty and gender bias at home. We also provide transportation to ferry the children from their villages. Regular parent-teacher meetings are conducted to sensitize the parents about their children and other social and environmental issues which need attention at home. 
 We are currently providing educational support, both academic and material, to 156 girls through 15 neighbouring villages. Through constant monitoring and follow-up, the SAPNA Shikshalaya team has been able to maintain 84.73% and 81.3% average attendance in academic session 2018-19 and 2017-18 respectively which has a direct impact on the academic performance of the girl. Dropout rates of girls, which, at the national level, is more than 40% by the time girls reach class V, has successfully been curtailed to less than 10%. In the last academic year 18-19, the dropout rate of the project was 8.1%.The school has improved literacy rate among girls coming from the rural belt; now there are more literate girls from low-income families, the community is more parent-teacher about the importance of girl’s education, girls have become more aware of other important issues which help them in their overall development. Girls have started to understand the importance of education due to which child marriages have come to a halt, Around 43 girls' saving accounts have been opened under Sukanya Samridhi Khata, in which a minimum of Rs 1000 is deposited in girls' accounts yearly, which they will be able to use it for their future.The total budget for this program for FY2019-20 is Rs.30 Lakhs. Sapna is need for Rs. 7,20,000 total of which Rs. 1,20,000 would support nutrition of 160 students for a year, Rs. 3,00,000 would support part salary of 12 teachers and Rs. 3,00,000 would be used for book and stationery of all 160 children.

Caring for the sick and destitute is a complex process. The risks of disability, chronic illness and destitution are processes exacerbated by poverty and other forms of structural inequalities. Cultural patterns, prevailing attitudes and expectations – all need to be factored in while honing in on a model of appropriate care. We believe in ensuring that a person who is not fully capable of self-care can maintain the highest possible quality of life, according to his or her individual preferences, with the greatest possible degree of independence, autonomy, participation, personal fulfilment and human dignity.We also believe that their first right is to reside with their own families if possible. Hence, our aim is to give them medical and supportive care until they are healthy enough for being rehabilitated with their families. In this way, SAPNA has been instrumental in restoring several sick and infirm people to their families. There are some unfortunate ones who do not have a home or have been abandoned by their families or are unknown. Some are even in a comatose state. Anandam at Alwar (Rajasthan) acts as a feeder for such survivors from Trauma Centre (AIIMS) and Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi who are in need of recuperative care and support.The organisation provides shelter to the sick and destitute; by ensuring their health and well-being. We keep patients at Anandam- Vijay Mandir &amp; Dadikar, Alwar &amp; One Short Stay Home at Noida. We provide immediate care support to patients discharged from Safdarjung Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, and Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre. We try giving them such an ambience where patients can actively start participating in day to day activities. As they start recovering from their ailments, our social workers start engaging them in activities of the organization.Patients from Anandam, Vijay Mandir had to be often brought to Delhi for checkups and in cases of emergencies. A short-stay home in Delhi has come in handy to meet our needs. Its objective is to extend support for poor and needy patients who come for treatment to Apex Government Hospitals such in Delhi. Depending upon the diagnosis, the patients stay for about a fortnight and entail recovery from a serious medical event such as an accident or multiple trauma, paralysis, or orthopaedic or surgical procedure.Presently, Anandam is providing shelter to 110 patients out of which 30 are female.Your support will cover the expenses of medicine &amp; medical treatment, nutrition, salary of social workers and ambulance transportation.
