“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. With a vision to have Happy Empowered Children, Sarthak Foundation reaches out to children to make them self-sustainable through education, socio-emotional strengthening and skills so that they are able to break out of abject poverty.We reach out to more than 11,000 beneficiaries, majority of whom are girls, who are the most vulnerable to dropping out of education.We currently run the following projects:1. Sarthak Yellow Rooms Community based intervention, currently in 47 communities of 4 districts of Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Sitapur, Barabanki and Gautam Buddha Nagar).2. Sarthak Gurukul Formal rural school based on the Yellow Rooms model of happy inclusive education, attended by children from 90 villages in Sitapur.3. Each Yellow Rooms setup comprises two rooms painted bright yellow. We place two permanent Educators there who spend 6 hours each, every day, all year round, for decades in the Yellow Rooms.The aim of this immersive and long-term project is to turn children from very marginalised backgrounds into complete and well rounded human beings by taking education, financial empowerment, emotional and physical wellness to their doorsteps.Over the years we ensure that almost 100% of the children in the community attend formal schools. We also fund their college education for them to become empowered and provide digital and vocational skilling to older children to make them more employable. The aim being to not just impart cursory literacy, but do more - ensure that the children are equipped to use the tool of education to move themselves and their families out of the cycle of poverty.The Yellow Rooms are completely free of cost for the children and the community.The impact of our work has been life-altering with dramatic improvement in the children’s education, gender and general awareness, hygiene, confidence, etiquettes, school performance, outlook to life, readiness for future and overall happiness. We reduce school dropout to almost 0%. Girls’ school attendance improves markedly and instances of girls getting married at the age of 13 or 14 become almost zero. 56% of our beneficiaries are girls.We also work closely with parents - counselling them, making them aware of government schemes and helping them receive their government entitlements.2. Sarthak Yellow SLATEs (Sciences, Languages, Arts, Theater and Ethics) (government school intervention)“SLATEs is short for Sciences, Languages, Arts, Theatre and Ethics. Good communications skills are critical for success today. A strong moral compass and robust value system are essential to lead a fulfilled life. Using Sarthak’s custom Naitik Shiksha curriculum and delivering it using Theatre, we work on both these aspects with the children.”Government schools of UP serve the poorest and most marginalised children, especially girls. The Yellow SLATEs project introduces a mini Yellow Rooms inside the government school premise. But it is unique in its approach to pedagogy because we use the element of theatre in the Yellow SLATEs class instruction.The focus of the Yellow Slates project is threefold:1) improving foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) of the children; and2) improving their communication skills, confidence, feeling of belongingness &amp; community and awareness of and pride in their cultural heritage (Sarthak’s custom Naitik Shiksha Curriculum)3) exposing the children to digital learningEach Yellow SLATEs serves 300 to 800 children per school depending on the number of children enrolled in the school.Yellow SLATEs works directly with the children admitted in a government school by taking one classroom and turning it into a mini-Yellow Rooms. We become part of the school timetable and children attend the Yellow SLATEs class as part of their regular class schedule. Each yellow SLATEs class is equipped with a smart Board/TV, digital lab with tablets and a library of value based story books.3. Sarthak Gurukul“When children come to Yellow Rooms after school, they need to do a bit of unlearning to reconcile the difference in approaches between their school and Sarthak Yellow Rooms. We started imagining “what if we have our own formal school that incorporates all the elements of the Yellow Rooms into the formal schooling structure”, and that’s how Sarthak Gurukul was born.”Sarthak Gurukul is a model rural school that incorporates all the elements of a Sarthak Yellow Rooms into the formal rural school structure. Sarthak Gurukul offers marginalised children from rural backgrounds an equitable, happy, gender-sensitive, well structured and digitally aided formal education at minimal cost. Located in Sonari village in Sitapur district, Gurukul is attended by about 1000 children from 90 villages.In Sarthak Gurukul, children get:● Gender equitable and gender sensitive environment● Instruction that breaks caste consciousness and caste barriers● Smart pedagogy using a mix of in-person and digital instruction● Physical fitness, yoga and sports with equal participation of girls● Practical life skills orientation

Yellow Room is a long term, in-depth and immersive intervention that aims to turn children from very marginalized backgrounds into complete and well rounded human beings by taking education and emotional and physical wellness to their doorsteps. While working with children from very marginalised backgrounds we realised that any touch-and-go intervention will have a very limited, if any, impact on the lives of children whose issues go much beyond ‘education’ and include substance abuse, hygiene and health issues, sexual and physical abuse and emotional and mental health issues. This is why we imagined our Yellow Rooms as not just centres where a child could go to get a free class but as permanent safe spaces right in the middle of their SEDG* communities.*SEDG- Socio Economically Disadvantaged Groups 
 Sarthak Foundation started with the belief that no child should be left behind for being born in economic and social disadvantage. All our projects and programmes are designed to make children and young people self-sustainable through education, social emotional strengthening and employability skills.We have more than 5000 beneficiaries, 76% of them girls, who are the most vulnerable to dropping out of education. We run following programmes1. Sarthak Yellow Rooms (currently in 19 slums of Lucknow, Noida, Sitapur and Barabanki) 2. Sarthak Gurukul (formal rural school based on the Yellow Rooms model of happy inclusive education, attended by children from 32 villages in Sitapur)3. Sarthak Resilience Incubator (employment training and gender empowerment project for girls between the ages of 16 and 21 years) Yellow RoomYellow Rooms are permanent safe spaces right in the middle of their SEDG* communities. They are open 6 days a week, all year round and each child in the slum spends 3 to 4 hours every day in the Yellow Rooms. The Yellow Rooms are completely free of cost for the children and the community. The Sarthak Yellow Rooms not only run classes for Science, Maths and English, but they also put equal stress on health, hygiene, industry exposure, nutrition, gender awareness and gender equality, general knowledge, communication and etiquette. The Yellow Rooms also undertake community outreach and parent counselling activities and establish long-lasting roots in the slums. By taking education and emotional wellness to their doorsteps we actually become part of the community. *SEDG- Socio Economically Disadvantaged Groups

Support Yellow Rooms For Education and Socio-Emotional Well-Being of Children in Slums

In villages of northern India education and literacy rate still remains grim and access to basic educational amenities is still a privilege. Sonari, a village in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh lacked quality education and good schools in the vicinity due to which the foundation of children remained weak. Girls were the worst affected. To ensure that children of villages have access to quality education, we established the first primary school, Sarthak Gurukul, in the village Sonari in the year 2016. The school caters to 500 children from 23 different villages. Although the education of children in villages continued digitally during COVID - 19, for 2 years the school remained closed. Now that the school has reopened, it requires maintenance and repainting to make the entire learning experience for children fun and engaging through meaningful aesthetics and basic infrastructural upkeep.  
 School environment and infrastructure plays a role in healthy and happy upbringing of children. Therefore, we want funds for infrastructural maintenance, which includes: <ol><li>Painting of the school</li><li>Interior of classrooms (education and value based materials)</li><li>Plantation</li></ol>
