“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. It slowly started taking care of mentally challenged women. Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children and women being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. The Sarvodya Collective – meaning “progress for all” – is committed to the social, cultural, and economic inclusion of the People with Intellectual and Development (PwIDD) community through myth-busting and fact-first information on their unique skills and gifts. The Sarvodya Collective is a Sec 8 non-profit working on three areas of strategic focus: Awareness of IDD to cultivate a more inclusive society, Awareness of resources to bolster the ecosystem and Enabling tools/solutions to meet the needs of PwIDD and caregivers.Problem Statement It is estimated that 35 million Indians live with an Intellectual and Developmental Disability the good news is that 85% of them have a mild form of the disability which means with the right support at the right time they can lead an independent and fulfilling life. But the bad news is due to a lack of awareness and sensitisation they do not have access to correct support, an inclusive environment and engaging life opportunities.Solution We believe that awareness and information resources are the keys to building a more inclusive society, we do this under our awareness campaign the Inclusive Duniya project which has 3 parts to it which are as follows:<ol><li>Publishing Naina’s Inclusive Duniya – we share sound information and showcase how one can be an ally in small but meaningful ways every day through beautifully illustrated original content. We have published 100+ stories in this Instacomic <a href="https://www.instagram.com/inclusiveduniya/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">(https://www.instagram.com/inclusiveduniya/</a>) over the last 12 months. </li></ol><ol><li>Inclusive Duniya Circles – we host fun, interactive spaces, led by volunteer facilitators, to inform pre-teens and teens about intellectual disabilities and help them discover ways in which they could be a friend and an ally. We have hosted 60+ conversations in schools and communities over the 3 months we have been doing these.</li></ol><ol><li>Inclusive Duniya project  – We offer knowledge partnership and capacity-building support to the parties that are interested to run the project to build inclusivity that is relevant to their context.</li></ol>Project Cost Our ask is for ₹ 10,00,000 which is divided into  ₹ 6,00,000 for building a whole school approach ₹ 2,00,000 for increasing the content depository and  ₹2,00,000 for D2C engagement.
