“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. Sathi (Society for Assistance to Children in Difficult Situations) is a national award-winning Indian non-profit working with children in vulnerable situations. Sathi has been doing this work for over 27 years. Founded by Pramod Kulkarni, an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad, Sathi has worked across the landscape of India to put children’s lives on track and ensure a stable future for every child. Sathi’s work includes: (1) the rescue of runaway and separated children from railway platforms and resettling them with families or childcare institutions; (2) engaging with government-run childcare institutions and working towards resettling children who languish in institutions without family contact; and (3) working with children in street and slum situations and helping them secure valid legal identity documents which will in turn grant them access to social protection schemes of the state. Sathi has had humble beginnings in the rugged district of Raichur in Karnataka; but has over the years expanded in geography and scale. Sathi has worked in more than 40 locations in 14 states across India and has reached out to more than a 100,000 child beneficiaries directly.Sathi’s most notable achievements include pioneering work in the rescue and rehabilitation of Children in Contact with Railways (CCR); this has resulted in the design and development of best practices for the rescue, counselling, restoration and aftercare of children. Sathi is known for this pioneering work across the social sector. Many non-profits making an entry into this space are mentored by Sathi.A second area of work includes working with Children in Street and Slum Situations (CiSS). Sathi has worked with thousands of children on the streets, otherwise deprived of basic health and education facilities. In recent years, Sathi has worked with global organisations to provide children with a unique digital identity and link this identity with social welfare schemes of state and central governments.Sathi’s work with government-run childcare institutions in 12 states across the country has helped resettle thousands of children who were languishing in institutions without individual attention and the scope for growth. Sonu Kumar is 12 years old and is from Jharkhand. He used to work with his parents as a labourer as their economic condition was so poor.

When Sonu was scolded and beaten by his mother for not going to work on one occasion, he ran away to his grandmother’s house. Unfortunately, he boarded the wrong train and found himself in an unfamiliar place with no family.

Sathi found him sleeping at the railway platform a few days later and we took him safely to our rehabilitation centre. Since Sonu’s education was in its infancy, Sathi initially had difficulty locating his village. However, we contacted local police and soon his parents were traced.

Once Sonu was reunited with his family, Sathi counseled his parents against physical abuse and encouraged them to enrol Sonu into a school. Seeing their economic condition, Sathi promised to help them financially to support his education.

Today, Sonu is back with his family without the pressure of working as he attends school. Sathi arranged for all his educational costs to be paid for by the government so Sonu’s family are alleviated from additional expenses.

Visit date: 23rd SeptemberGive team: Ritu Jain Disha is a bastion of safety and care for the countless specially abled children that walk through its doors, and GIVE's visit to the premises only confirmed that. Our first interaction was with the project head Ms. Bharti Kunteta. She informed us about Disha Foundation's holistic approach to education, which includes workshops for parents, special community awareness programs, and training programs for teachers to manage specially-abled children. She spoke with passion of a new kind of "theater therapy" that indulged the kids creative spirits and helped them work through their disabilities. Deepak, who has down syndrome, and Rohit, who has cerebral palsy were two kids from the vocational arts class who came to take our breakfast order. They were going to prepare our meals under the supervision of the chef. After that, Neha and Prayati took us to the classrooms where we observed the kids learning. It was incredible seeing the professionalism and specialization in the imparting of education to these specially-abled kids. The staff were motivated, driven and empathetic towards the children. Undoubtedly our favorite part of the trip was meeting the children. Although suspicious at first, they opened up in time and were full of smiles and hugs. Neha told me their individual stories and their current status. It was incredible to see the improvement after coming to Disha. When we spoke to them, they told us all about their time at Disha and remarked on how happy they were there.It was a pleasure playing and laughing with them and we cannot wait to see them again! Hundreds of children run away from their homes every day in India, mostly as a refuge from negligent parents, pressures at school, child abuse and at times, simply because of an argument at home. However, the time it takes for a runaway to become a "platform child" is frighteningly short. 
 Our staff visit railway platforms on a daily basis to identify runaway children. Once identified, children are registered with the Child Welfare Committee so families can be traced. Then they are brought to our home placement centre where they are provided with food, shelter and care.We organise regular counselling sessions, de-addiction centres, and informal education classes for children, which help their reintegration with social life. Those who are reluctant to go home are enrolled into our home orientation camp and if a family can’t be traced, they are referred to other organisations. 
 Early intervention not only saves a child from the dangers of platform life but it makes repatriation easier, as the child is more willing to return. Our rehabilitation centre supports every step of this process.
