I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Hunger and malnutrition have become a reality for thousands of elderly parents abandoned by their own children, in villages and slums across India. Satya Special School was started in 2003 as a rehabilitation centre offering free therapeutic and academic facilitation to 20 children with special needs, now has 1029 children under its umbrella. Satya started its journey with a single building, now has ten centres including three Village centres, Mobile Therapy units covering 44 villages, four upcoming Satellite centres, Prosthetics and Orthotics unit and over 100 staff. Each child is assessed according to their individual and psychological capabilities and training is provided based on their needs. The school has specialized trained staff engaged in various programs in education, early intervention, therapy, livelihoods, and advocacy, ultimately aiming for the inclusion of children with disabilities.A GuideStar Platinum NGO, Satya has received numerous accolades for its work, including the Model of Excellence Award for Early Childhood Care by the University of Oregon, US; the 2018 World Cerebral Palsy Day Award, and was featured as a model NGO in the Dasra- Bank of America report on disability.

At the heart of Satya Special School's operations is a robust process for enrolling students, facilitated through partnerships with hospitals like JIPMER and government healthcare providers. These partnerships ensure regular health check-ups and free medication for the students, a cornerstone of their holistic care model. The project team's dedication is evident in their meticulous approach to integrating therapy into both the school environment and the students' homes, particularly for those in remote areas where access to transportation and therapy would otherwise be challenging. In Muttrampattu Village Rehabilitation Centre, the utilization of funds was showcased through a tour that included classrooms, therapy rooms, and a water therapy room. Regular therapy sessions, conducted by college graduates and trained physiotherapists, are key to improving mobility and achieving individual milestones. Interactions with the parents of beneficiaries were particularly enlightening. Their stories of transformation and newfound hope for their children's futures underscore the profound impact of Satya Special School. The progress observed in these children, from gaining self-care skills to aspirations of respectable employment, highlights the school's success in fostering independence and dignity..Beyond AcademicsSatya Special School's vibrant community life, filled with co-curricular activities like sports, quizzes, and dance, ensures that students not only learn but thrive. Moolchand (name changed) is a unique boy who requires special care to reach his potential. At a young age, he was considered a 'problem child' because of his short-temperedness and seemingly uncooperative nature. As such, he was denied the opportunity to attend school just a year into his education. At this point, he was examined by doctors and found to be a special needs child. He joined Satya School a year later and was provided rehabilitation services. Thus he was able to continue learning. A few years down the line, Moolchand rejoined his school at a limited capacity, after securing his parents' consent. Satya Special School guides him through his biweekly speech training sessions as well as yoga training. His school headmaster has noted his improvement both in his interpersonal skills as well as his learning capability. There are several children just like Moolchand who suffer from disabilities that either go unnoticed or are misinterpreted. Help us find, rehabilitate, and reintegrate those poor kids into society. This centre serves 34 boys and 27 girls with different disabilities: intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, autism, down syndrome, etc., all from low-income neighboring families. Mothers of children with special needs often bear the brunt of the disability: fathers often desert the mother and the child, and regular employment with a child with special needs becomes difficult. Mothers are left with no real way to earn a steady income, and increases their economic dependence. The children too, are caught in the cycle, unable to live a dignified independent life. 
 Our Livelihoods Project, DIGNITY, helps mothers of children with special needs not just have a livelihood for themselves, but also involve their children, and other youth with disabilities in their businesses. DIGNITY helps set up small businesses for these women, so that they can continue earning and working, while providing a way for other youth with disabilities to also create a livelihood for themselves. DIGNITY provides the seed capital and training to help the women start and run businesses. We also help create marketing channels where required. Examples of enterprises include: idiappam flour making, basket weaving, petty shop, etc. 
 With DIGNITY, women and youth with disabilities will earn a livelihood and learn important life skills to help them in their lives. We plan to provide the seed money for fifteen (15) businesses for starters, and request your help for the same. With an average of two helpers per business, the project will help 45 people with their livelihoods.

DIGNITY: Livelihoods for Special Mothers

The financial impact of disability in a child on the family/household is significant. If the average monthly expenditure on a child without disabilities is Rs 500, the expenditure on a child with special needs is 4 – 5 times or higher depending on the nature of disability and the related medical &amp; health conditions. Even families from the higher income group find disability management for a child with special needs a huge burden on their financial situation.  Satya Special School caters to a large number of CWSNs and to ensure continued intervention for these children we propose individual sponsorship plan where an individual/family or a group sponsors a child for an year. 
 HOW WILL SPONSORING MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE CHILD : 1.        Provide need based intervention that are otherwise out of the reach of the lower strata of society2.        The needed assistive devices like wheel chairs, calipers, crutches that will help the child become independent will be made available to the child3.        Supplementary nutrition will be provided to the children to aid in general health4.        The complete financial responsibility for intervention will be taken care of, reducing the Mother’s stress leaving her some freedom to play the role of a co-therapist to help the child improve his/her condition5.        Focus on holistic development covering all aspects of development and growth of the CWSN, ensuring better successYou will receive a yearly update on the various activities at Satya. Children with disabilities are often less a priority in the family when selecting the share of spends on their needs. The sponsorship programme removes a large part of the financial burden from the parents and ensures the child remains in school and continues to get the much needed intervention services without which independent daily living would become impossible.

HELPING A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Children with special needs do not receive appropriate individualized therapy and education in Pondicherry. Their development is further delayed without proper therapy. Children with special needs who can lead independent lives as contributing members of society are isolated and their possible growth is stunted. In rural Pondicherry, there are many superstitions surrounding disability, especially intellectual and developmental disabilities. 
 Satya Special School's programs combine modern, traditional, and alternative therapies for optimal development of each child with special needs. With a trained team of special educators, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and others such as musicians, artists, and performers, Satya's programs help multiply the effect of each kind of intervention.We provide children with the following therapies and resources for development: <ol><li>Special education</li><li>Physiotherapy</li><li>Occupational Therapy</li><li>Speech Therapy</li><li>Sensory Integration</li><li>Hydrotherapy</li><li>Aquatherapy</li><li>Music therapy</li><li>Art therapy</li><li>Drama therapy</li><li>Hobbies</li><li>Vocational training</li><li>Placement </li></ol>and any resource that will help the child and/or the parents access a better life for the child. Many of the children at our centres go on to be integrated into mainstream schools, and some of them move on to our vocational centres for training.We have around 1100 children across our ten centres, including three village centres. While some of the projects are funded, we need help for about 50 children urgently. 
 We wish to provide therapy that will enable the 50 children to reach their maximum potential: be it performing their own Activities of Daily Living, graduating Class 10 under National Open Schooling, or moving on to study a vocation at the community college.We want each child to receive all the resources necessary to enable their maximum development. We wish to mainstream at least 5 of these 50 children in government or private schools.

Help Satya's kids with special needs

One of the two major economic activities of Puducherry is tourism, which has been completely destroyed by COVID-19. Ironically, the state has one of the best statistics in terms of COVID control; yet, it is financially devastated by the lack of tourists.Puducherry is home to a large number of small vendors such as flower sellers, handicraft makers, and sellers of souvenirs, who have all lost their livelihoods completely.For People with Disabilities, especially from rural areas, the effect is especially catastrophic because the broken supply chain is not easily surmounted, due to several factors, each compounding the other: over-dependence on the supplier, limited mobility, lack of diversification, and as in the case of handicrafts, a lack of traditionally established demand. 
 RELIVE ((REVITALIZING EMPLOYMENT AND LIVELIHOODS FOR VULNERABLE ENTITIES) Puducherry seeks to start/restart businesses that have potential to reach a wider market, such as handicrafts, and to provide seed money for businesses who have been forced to dip into their savings and principal amounts to keep themselves afloat over the past few months. This includes people such as petty shop owners, flower and vegetable sellers, sellers of innerwear, etc. 
 The project will serve to help families of the differently abled surmount the financial challenges brought about by COVID-19. HANDICRAFTS: The project will help artisans identify and sustain different marketing channels, including online sales. This will bring about a much-needed diversification for the artisans. MOBILE GARMENT SALES, ETC.: COVID-19 has brought about new products and methods of selling. The diversification into selling of market-based products such as cloth masks, and petticoats will help the beneficiaries improve their adaptability to new market conditions, so that they are able to quickly respond. VEGETABLE VENDORS/PETTY SHOP OWNERS: The project will help vendors restart their earlier businesses, as Puducherry limps back to a new normal.
