For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, resource cutbacks and other measures to curb the spread of the new coronavirus are putting victims of human trafficking at risk of further exploitation, while organized crime networks could further profit from the pandemic, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).Women in sex work and victims of trafficking are now at greater risk of re-trafficking. The extended duration of lockdown making it extremely difficult to earn livelihood as well as access any financial support at this point or in near future. Most of them have been bread earners for the family but due to loss of employment/source of earning, women in sex work and victims of Human trafficking, today, are vulnerable to indebtedness, violence and exploitation.The situation is similar with the restored survivors of trafficking. Those who were working in informal sector are now without jobs for several months and at a risk of being pushed into more exploitative situation. 
 The proposed Project aims to bridge the skill-gaps between the women in or rescued from prostitution and Self-Employment Opportunities. It will facilitate selection of 100 women in or rescued from prostitution to make informed choices about their livelihood, get trained in market oriented self-employability skills to develop small enterprises and access funds, savings and enterprise development support. It uses a skills training model and an array of other interventions that equip the women be entrepreneurs and work towards financial independence. The aim of the intervention is to generate meaningful, sustainable and economically stimulating self-employment for the women in or rescued prostitution in Maharashtra. Women in prostitution or those who are rescued are vulnerable to exploitation or at a risk of being pushed to the same exploitative situation due to lack of sustainable livelihood. The intervention offers skills training in entrepreneurship development for empowerment of women in or rescued from prostitution and life skills, access to seed money as to start-up capital and mentoring.The specific objectives are:<ol><li>To train 100 women in or rescued from prostitution in entrepreneurship development</li><li>To support 50 survivors of sex trafficking rescued in Maharashtra to set up small-scale enterprise development and provision of start-up grants</li></ol> 
 A livelihood option as a means of economic rehabilitation leading to economic empowerment is the logical end of the rehabilitation process. It is imperative to focus on economic rehabilitation strategies as part of the overall social reintegration process - as this is the key to providing economic independence to survivors, ensuring them an identity in society, and making their relapse into an exploitative situation unlikely.The proposed intervention aims at providing crucial services of Counselling, Life Skills, financial literacy and training in Entrepreneurship Development to women in sex work and victims of sex trafficking in urban and rural parts of Maharashtra state These interventions could get them a new lease of life and be an source of livelihood that is non exploitative and gives agency to women. Hence the intervention aims to provide entrepreneurship training and seed money support as rehabilitation measures. Providing education and assistance for enterprise is undoubtedly a good medium to ensure a sustainable income making their chances of falling back to same exploitative situations less likely.

Economic Empowerment of Women in Sex Work and/or Victims of Sex Trafficking through Entrepreneurship Development Initiatives in Maharashtra

The growing urban poverty and disparity have adverse impact on lives of women. They face multiple disadvantages due to poverty, gender discrimination, and lack of access to higher education. The present project aims at empowering young women staying in urban settlements through employability skills training, critical life skills and linking them to jobs and other income generating options like enterprise development leading to financial independence and greater control over their own lives. Women living in urban slums face severe risks and vulnerabilities. It increases the impact of multiple disadvantages that women face due to poverty, gender discrimination, and lack of access to higher education, early marriage and limited opportunities to earn their livelihood. Additionally, lack of safety and cultural practices restricts them within the boundaries of domestic life and increases vulnerability to violence denying them opportunities to break through the cycle of poverty and oppression. 
 The proposed solution focuses on the socio-economic empowerment of young women staying in these urban settlements, and to provide them with an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and discrimination. This would be done through employability skills training, providing support for education, critical life skills and linking them to jobs and other income generating options like enterprise development leading to financial independence and greater control over their own lives. 
 The organisation believes that the issues related to employability and social issues and crimes against women cannot be tackled in Isolation. They are in fact interrelated, and over the years, the organisation has learned to view equality and social change vis-a-vis economic reality.

Help Young Women End the Cycle of Poverty & Violence

The pandemic has significantly impacted the education system which already seemed like a privilege than a basic right for many underprivileged children. Through Balwadis Save The Children India shall ensure pre-school education to children from their project locations in Maharashtra in the age group of 3 to 8 years and ensure smooth transition to formal education. In ₹1,954 you can support a child's education cost for one year.The early years are understood to be the most significant stage of child development, with research indicating that children from poorest families learn approximately 30 million fewer words than those from more affluent families by age 3. For children from impoverished backgrounds, ECCE is particularly critical. A child who lives in poverty and attends a quality preschool program experiences long-lasting primary and secondary positive effects. The NEP 2020 reinforces this implicitly indicating ECCE to be the greatest and most powerful equalizer. Jaime Saavedra, Global Director for Education, describes the impact of pandemic as “largest simultaneous shock to all education systems in our lifetimes”. Worldwide, it has rendered early childhood education system on the verge of collapse. Many children below the age of 6 haven’t received systematic education inputs for over a year now, highlighting the increased chances of dropping out from formal schooling owing to magnified learning gaps. Young children must receive continuous quality ECCE inputs to enable their holistic development.  
 Through our Balwadi project, we aim:<ol><li>To provide quality pre-school education age and developmentally appropriate experiential learning opportunities to young children from lower socio-economic communities of Maharashtra, in the age group of 3-6 years. (online/offline mode of delivery)</li><li>To facilitate and ensure the smooth transition of pre-primary children in the Balwadis into mainstream formal schools</li><li>To train and continuously mentor the Balwadi teachers intensively and periodically on early childhood education and care (virtually, through a range of applications and platforms), in order to build on the balwadi teachers existing early childhood education knowledge, skills, and attitudes, rendering her an agent of change</li><li>To support the parent agency in becoming the implementing agency of experiential age and developmentally appropriate activities and creating a supportive home learning environment as young children continue to learn remotely.</li><li>We aim to facilitate the provision of tabs to ensure that children have continued access to educational material, all through these uncertain times. (Subject to availability of Funding)</li></ol>

Facilitating Access to Quality Education for Vulnerable Children, in the Age Group of 3 to 8 Years

Women make up half the world’s population, but, in most places, they don’t make up half of its work force. They own only one-third of the world’s formally registered small-and-medium- sized enterprises, yet they provide most of the world’s unpaid child and elder care and are more likely to work in insecure, low-wage jobs in the informal economy. They also are more likely to face legal barriers to full participation in the economy, with limited access to finance, markets, and property.Research shows that increasing women’s labor force participation by 10 percentage points could add $770 billion to India’s GDP by 2025. When women are empowered economically, they invest in their families and communities, spurring economic growth and creating more stable societies.That’s the reason we at Vipla Foundation are looking to tackle this issue through this intervention. 
 Vipla Foundation has been providing employability-oriented skills training to young women since the year 2009. The courses are short- and medium-term modules (45 days to 150 days) of short-term livelihood programs meant for unemployed urban young women between the ages of 18-30 years, from underprivileged families. Most of the young women who are part of the programme are the ones who have dropped out of formal education early, have no or limited skills to find formal employment and can be potential victims of gender-based violence. The average annual family income of our beneficiaries is INR 2.5 lakhs.The project provides employability skills training to young women from slums around Mumbai and Pune and ensures that 70% trained and certified candidates are successfully placed on the job. Vipla Foundation partners with renowned technical organizations to provide support for the Training of Trainers and provide government-recognized National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC) and Sector Skills Council (SSC) certification to successful candidates in the Banking and Financial Service Sector, BPO, Sales and Retail and Beauty and wellness. The project also provides life-skills training that runs parallel to employability skills. The sessions on gender, gender-based violence, and laws related to violence against women are included in the core essential skills training. 
 <ul><li>Mobilization and orientation of 4000 young women from urban communities in Mumbai and Thane</li><li>Providing employability skills training to 3000 young women from targeted communities</li><li>Ensuring that 90% of enrolled candidates complete training i.e., 2700 women complete training over three years and are certified</li><li>Achieving 70% placement of trained candidates i.e., nearly 2300 women are placed on jobs, suitable to their skills with average starting salary of INR 10000 per month</li><li>To equip beneficiaries with critical life skills and confident decision making in order to exercise their rights on issues affecting them.</li><li>To increase income of beneficiaries through job placement/self-employment and post placement support.</li></ul>.
