The number of homeless and destitute men, women and children in our cities living under appalling conditions, in the streets is quite shocking. They are deprived of basic necessities, often ending up in premature deaths, diseases and not to mention crippling poverty. Thankfully, the Police pick them up and take them to one or the other humanitarian home in Bangalore. RVM Transit Home in Hennur is one such place, supported by Senior Citizens Bangalore. RVM Home is situated in Chikkagubbi village, Hennur, Bangalore where a large number of mentally and physically challenged elderly and young men and women stay. 
 Senior Citizens Bangalore assists the RVM Foundation Humanitarian Home in providing food, shelter, medical care and a hygienic environment for the recovery and rehabilitation of its destitute inmates. Many of the residents are mentally ill and are on medication. SCB provides infrastructural facilities such as bedding, solar heater, borewell, and water harvesting. Nutritious food is provided to them with compassion and adequate nutrient requirements of the residents are achieved.Since most of inmates are suffering from very poor health and several physical disabilities, Senior Citizens have focused on intervention with nutrition and medical help. In order to build and improve their immune system SCB started giving nutritious food by providing vegetables, fruits and eggs in their regular meals and to reduce their dependence on medical treatment. SCB also conducts eye check up to the residents and if necessary glasses are also provided. Medical check ups are also conducted for all the residents.Fruits of all kinds are provided regularly with curds or lassi every day. This has brought in a vast improvement in their health and it is visibly evident. The positive energy is clearly visible, and the participation of some of the inmates in some of the events is truly satisfying. Special food is provided to inmates on festivals or birthdays of our membersThe organisation is trying to provide better facilities and infrastructure, but it has not been possible due to lack of funds. 
 Significant improvement in the physical and mental health of the 129 inmates by the provision of healthy and nutritious meals, medicines and health care, and emotional support in a stable and secure environment has been seen.Once the resident is stabilised, he or she is usually moved to a more permanent residence at another Home or NGO.

Impact Sandya is a first-year B.Sc. student at Bangalore-based Jayadeva hospital. She travels all the way from Hoskote which is a two-hour ride away from her college. Her father is a factory worker, while her mother is a homemaker. With a total family income of INR 10,000, Sandya struggled to pay her college fees of INR 22,000. It was only after she received a scholarship that covered all her fees, did Sandya continue pursuing her graduate studies and now plans to pursue her postgraduate studies in the same field. What's even more heartwarming is the fact that she is the first from her family to opt for a graduate course. About The Program The scholarship program initiated by SCB is aimed at meritorious underprivileged students. The School and College Scholarship Committee at SCB approaches schools and colleges, to recommend bright and needy students for the program between the months of May and June. Colleges maintain records of family backgrounds which are double-checked through interactions with the parents. The records are reviewed by SCB member volunteers.SCB undertakes to pay only part of the fees. The scholarships thus awarded for school students are anywhere between INR 3,000 TO INR 5,000 whereas college going candidates receive up to INR 15,000. The organization also supports students studying specialized courses in Medicine, Mathematics, etc. About The NGO Senior Citizens Bangalore was started by a group of retired defence personnel along with a bunch of corporate professionals to empower underprivileged children and mold them into leaders of tomorrow. Over a period of time, the mission of the organization inspired other like-minded retired individuals from the public and private sector. They work towards making quality primary and high school education available to meritorious children who otherwise wouldn't have been able to continue with their education owing to their underprivileged backgrounds. They help such students and handicapped children in rural areas around Bangalore procure educational loans as well. The lowermost economic segment of Indian citizens sends its children to ‘government’ schools. The schools provide mid-day meals to the students. This scheme has hugely contributed to heath and growth of disadvantaged children. Despite this, many children remain undernourished. This is evident from the below normal (less that 18) Body Mass Index (BMI).   
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supplements the mid-day meal with added nutrition of a boiled egg, banana, nuts chick, and rag malt. The program is run in a government girls school in a rural area near Bangalore. It impacts 300 girl children This supplementation has resulted in improvement of BMI. Improved health is hypothesized to result in better academic performance as well as participation in sports and co curricular activities.

NUTRITION FOR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED RURAL GIRL STUDENTS

Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supports a school for economically disadvantaged girl children in rural Karnataka. Over the years it has upgraded infrastructure, improved nutrition, given scholarships and equipped the school with digital education aids. These initiatives have increase the pass percentage from 76% to 96%. SCB believes that more value can be added by promoting sports and cultural activities 
 SCB is seeking financial assistance in: 1. Special nutrition and training of a girl athlete selected to train for representing India in weight-lifting.2. Organizing Inter-School Sports Competition And Provision Of Sports Attire.3. Organizing Training In Classical And Folk Dance and Music. 
 1. The girl athlete’s success will inspire many youngsters to emulate her.2. Create a sports culture for physical fitness and personality development.3. Develop talent in cultural spheres and develop inner sensitivity.

PROMOTING SPORTS & CULTURAL ACTIVITIES IN A RURAL GIRLS SCHOOL

The lowermost economic segment of Indian citizens sends its children to ‘government’ schools. When these students clear the SSLC / Class Xth Board exams, they go to government or private colleges where the fee is quite steep by their standards. A degree course in Commerce could range from INR15,000 to 30,000 per year. The parents take loans from local money lenders and get sucked into the cycle of debt. 
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) identifies meritorious students from a pre-selected set of government run schools and offers scholarships and educational assistance to such underprivileged students till they complete their higher education. The parents are usually construction labourers, security guards, vegetable vendors, auto drivers, poor farmers or those engaged in household work. SCB makes no distinction of caste or religion with regard to meritorious students. Many beneficiaries have gone on to become engineers, accountants and other such qualifications that have transformed their family’s economic condition. Some have even completed PhD and given expression to their passion for academics.  
 1. When first generation learners complete higher education they lift entire families out of poverty.2. The burden of the poor being trapped by educational loans is avoided.3. Helps deserving students express their potential otherwise held back by poverty.

Besides physical debilitation, the trauma of sub-human living has affected their mental health too. The home provides shelter, a hygienic environment, nutritious food, medical care and rehabilitation. Most importantly it provides hope and human kindness to fellow humans most in need.  
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supports the home with food, medical care and infrastructural facilities. It is seeking funds for food, medicines, and medical care of the destitute inmates of the home. The cost per inmate comes to approximately INR 5000 per year. 
 1. A healthy diet comprising vegetables, fruits, eggs, and dairy products is proven to vastly improvehealth and reduce need for medication.2. Medical care includes daily medicine requirements, regular doctor visits, health check-ups, and hospitalisation when needed. Significant improvement in physical and mental health is achieved through these measures. 3. Sponsoring special lunches on birthdays and festivals provides a sense of security, gives a sense of importance, camaraderie, and emotional support. This has contributed in no small measure to giving them hope and happiness.

NUTRITION& MEDICAL CARE FOR DESTITUTES AT HUMANITARIAN HOME

Schools catering to the economically disadvantaged are constantly in need for enhanced physical infrastructure and maintenance of existing infrastructure. Many schools lack functional toilets, have dilapidated classrooms, and unhygienic kitchens to cook the mid-day meal.  
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supports such schools in Bangalore and rural areas near the city. To improve basic school infrastructure we are seeking financial support to:1. Building of clean toilets in 2 schools2. Building sewerage to avoid unhygienic waste water logging around the toilet area in 1 school3. Provide utilities for the kitchen in 1 school 
 The infrastructure listed above cater to basic necessities such as clean toilets and hygienic meals.

BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE IN SCHOOLS FOR THE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED

First generation learners need extra support to realise their academic potential. They usually attend government schools with not much pedagogical aids to support the otherwise dedicated teachers. Supporting them with digital education aids will have a multiplier effect on improving learning. 
 Senior Citizens Bangalore (SCB) supports such schools in Bangalore city as well as rural areas near the city. To enhance learning we seek funds to install Digital white boards, provide laptops and tablets to students and teachers, and Byju course content software. 
 1. This initiative has improved school pass results from 76% four years ago to 96% now. 2. Equipping teachers with laptops helps them maintain records of each child, and prepare lessons in advance3. Tablets are school property which students use till they graduate. It helps them access Byju software and improve their learning.4. Students who earn our scholarships for higher education are provided with laptops required in such institutions.
