For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. Setu Charitable Trust is running 16 Balwadis where pre-primary education is imparted. At the end of a year of learning at the Balwadi all the children are enrolled in regular schools. All the children are provided midday meal at the Balwadi.

Nearly 800 children all belonging to vulnerable section of the society viz. Sex Workers, conservancy staff, Qureshi Community, leprosy patients etc. are the beneficiaries.

There are 6 Vocational Guidance Centres for imparting training in tailoring & beautician trades. Most of the girls / women passing out from these centres are self-employed and earn a fair income. 

Women Empowerment

Setu Charitable Trust partners Maharashtra State agency, MSAC in Control of HIV & AIDS. Setu Charitable Trust works with 4500 Sex Workers and 4000 truckers and takes care of their health needs like provision of medicines, hospitalisation diet etc. The beneficiaries are counselled about safe sex practices. 

Healthcare

Through its Vocational Guidance Centres, Setu Charitable Trust is able to upgrade the skills of participants who number around 300 every year.  These women, equipped with employable skills start earning income to help improve family income. There are more than 300 Self Help Group (SHG) of women under the umbrella of Setu Charitable Trust. Setu Charitable Trust helps in project preparation, raising of loan, establishment of enterprises and marketing of product etc. 

Livelihood

Setu Charitable Trust is engaged in programmes of rural development in Bhagalpur, taluka of Deoria District, Uttar Pradesh. It runs a Girls College an ITI, a women’s empowerment Centre and a Health Home for providing medical services to needy persons. More than 150 Cataract surgeries are performed every year.  

Community & Rural Development

Setu Charitable Trust has successfully implemented “Save Sparrow” campaign. It encourages villagers to plant trees mostly fruits bearing. A campaign was launched for plantation of Moringa Trees. Setu Charitable Trust is also propagating the need of conversation of water through renovation of old tanks. Setu Charitable Trust raised Rs. 45 Lakhs and renovated an old tank at village Mahilaya, Dist. Deoria. GAIL CSR provided the funds for the renovation works. The District Administration partnered in renovation of the tank. These works generate employment for the rural poor. 

Environment

Setu Trust believes that a large section of our population has remained marginalised and has not been included in the march of progress and development.Since its inception in the year 1994, Setu Trust has been working for the empowerment of the underprivileged section of the community, largely women and children from vulnerable communities. As the educational level in these communities is very low and there is large-scale dropout among children, Setu Trust runs various programmes to prepare children for enrolment and retention in regular schools. Vocational training of unskilled girls is a focus area of the Trust.In its survey, the Trust has found that women from the challenged communities can not access different welfare programmes including health outreach programmes of the Government. Setu Trust ensures the full participation of its beneficiaries in different developmental programmes by encouraging the formation of Self Help Groups and raising microfinance for establishing enterprises and marketing of products.
