For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Amidst the current monster wave of Covid19 spreading across rural India, the existing critical care facilities of Paschim Medinipur district are woefully inadequate to deal with any surge of Covid affected patients needing critical care support. The District Administration of Paschim Medinipur and Health Department officials of the Government of West Bengal have requested St. Joseph’s Hospital to activate Covid facilities on emergency basis to pre-empt loss of life. 
 COVID CRITICAL CARE Centre at Seva Kendra - St Joseph’s Hospital, Phulpahari, Paschim MedinipurTo operationalize on war footing this facility critical care centre with ICU and high dependency facilities to prevent loss of lives and supplement the efforts of the government infrastructure. The centre will have a 6 bed ICU, 14 oxygen beds and a 20 bed step down ward. 
 Through this critical intervention, we expect to provide life saving covid treatment to more than 3000 patients over the next 12 months and prevent loss of life in all preventable cases.

Cyclone Amphan has wreaked unprecedented devastation to vast areas of West Bengal, including the fragile Sunderbans region. Millions have been left stranded with their thatched homes blown away or submerged in waters. Agricultural farms and fisheries have been destroyed, total disrupting the income of rural households. The losses are yet to be completely ascertained as of now and surveys by the Government agencies and NGO's are underway to asses total scale of damage. 
 Seva Kendra Calcutta has been delivering relief services and various socio development projects in these areas for 4 decades now, with teams on ground. We are activating existing resources and logistics to reach essential relief materials, dry food rations and tarpaulins to the most affected and isolated clusters of villages. 
 The immediate aim is to prevent starvation, malnutrition and exposure to inclement natural conditions. A long term rehabilitation programme with defined goals and targeted impact is being drawn up for implementation in phase II of our operations
