For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. Sita Gramodyog Vikas Sansthan

Sakri Chowki is a small village in Arwal block, Bihar, where around 50 families from Musahar communities live. Musahar (meaning rat eaters) refers to a community who are socially and economically discriminated against due to their low position in the caste system.

Around 85% of the children and women here suffer from malnutrition while poor health facilities make them prone to diseases such as malaria and kala-azar. There is no drainage system in the village, resulting in all household sewage collecting in open areas. This meant that hand pumps were contaminated.

SGVS decided to take action and began working with the community. First and foremost, we initiated a health and sanitation awareness programme so the community could be taught how to prevent air and water borne diseases. Regular home visits by doctors and frequent workshops were also conducted to ensure villagers were putting into practice hygienic methods.

A scheme called ‘clothes for work’ was launched where people joined together to clean drains and sweep the village. In exchange for their hard work we provided them with clothing. A structured drainage system was built in the area thus preventing further infection. For clean drinking water, SGVS repaired all three hand pump platforms and mobilised the villagers to clean the entire water channel. Additionally, stainless steel containers were given to each family to keep the water free from contamination.

Today, the village has a much improved sanitation facility and clean drinking water.

New scheme brings hygiene and happiness to Musahars

Renu Devi is a poor Musahar woman in Bihar. Like most of the people from her community, Renu works as an agricultural labourer along with her family. The job provides a meagre income of Rs. 50 for each day of work. 

When Renu got pregnant, her family were unconcerned with her health care and her nutritional needs. As a result, she grew anemic and too weak to take care of the nutritional requirements of the unborn baby. 

SGVS conducted awareness programmes and also arranged for medical check-ups. Renu and her family attended one such medical camp. Renu benefited immensely from the intervention.She learnt how to be healthy and what accessible foods were best to encourage a safe pregnancy. Her health improved and so did the health of the baby. She delivered a healthy baby in February, 2009 and her health remained stable after delivery.

Most of the Musahar community in Bihar lives in Sakri Chowki Musahari, the wasteland area that comes under the state government. Most of the people here work as daily wage labourers or agricultural workers on less than Rs. 50 ($1) a day. There is no school in the village, and the existing schools are far away in remote rural regions. As a result, the children were not attending school. Additionally, these children were often humiliated by other students from different communities.

Sita Gramodyog Vikas Sansthan (SGVS) set-up non-formal education centres for children in villages and nearby areas. We also distributed free bags, uniforms and books to children so as to encourage them to attend.

Ultimately, the change was superb. Children started attending schools regularly and those who couldn’t get to school in the nearby village started attending the non-formal education centres.

In India, one maternal death is reported every 10 minutes, putting the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) at 212 per one lakh live births. This becomes a greater concern among disadvantaged women from marginalised communities, such as Musahars who were historically marginalised, discriminated against, and placed at the bottom of the social hierarchy. 
 This project aims to educate women from the Musahar community about the importance of a nutritional diet during pregnancy and the lactating period. We are running the project in various areas of Arwal district, Bihar. Free medical check-ups are also arranged for all women in the region so that any woman running the risk of nutritional deficiency can be helped accordingly.In addition, special awareness programmes are arranged where we teach women low-cost nutritional practices and what food needs to be included in their daily diet to protect their health. 
 This programme aims to affect the 800 pregnant and lactating women in the Arwal region.For as little as Rs. 800, you can offer a pregnant or lactating mother a nutritional diet and create awareness on looking after their health.

Provide nutritional care to needy pregnant women

In India, around 45% of Dalits are unable to read and write. In Bihar itself, the rate of literacy stands at 19%; the lowest in the country.Children from the Dalit communities get no education mostly because of fear of discrimination and the expense to their family. Dalit women suffer doubly as they are both deprived and live as women in a gender-based society. 
 We are providing education and training to girls and women from Dalit communities. In addition, we also distribute school uniforms and educational supplies to young girls.At our various centres, girls not only complete their education but are also well-equipped for future employment. We also engage with the parents to ensure that they send their girls to school regularly. 
 We are presently providing education for 250 girls in Arwal, Bihar. A small donation of Rs. 2,684 will support one academic year for a rural girl and improve not only her life but that of her whole family.

The Dalit Communities termed as the scheduled caste is the main underprivileged section of the society residing in the district Arwal of Bihar State. They are also engaged in traditional craft works which are also in the depletion due to exploitative production situation existing in the area. There are very meager livelihood opportunities for these communities as the traditional occupations are on the depletion and new options have been not explored by these communities. Wage labor is the most relied upon livelihood option and migration is an unavoidable consequence of the same. The area is rich in bamboo availability and a lot of bamboo related works used to take place in this area. This used to fetch good income to large sections of poor families. The market for bamboo products is still prosperous. For the target group which is not land owning class 75% of family earning comes from daily labour at brick factory, nearby town and cities and Agriculture labour. The vulnerability of women could be reduced by enhancing the livelihood options where they can earn secured income without entering in to the dangerous route of migration and hazardous employment.  
 The purpose of this project is ‘Economic Empowerment of the Mahadalit community through feasible and sustainable Income Generation Programme’. The project aims to enhance the livelihood options before the poorest communities through providing vocational training and then by assisting and facilitating income generation through the imparted skill. Objectives·       To enhance skill cum income generation activities among the poorest of the poor·       To reduce poverty and the number of people living under BPL ·       To facilitate raw material availability and marketing so that the income generation activity could become sustainableStrategies·       To identify the neediest and the enthusiastic women who are interested in engaging themselves in independent income generation activities·       To conduct batch by batch training on preparing bamboo baskets and other bamboo based products·       Supporting and facilitating the trained women for attaining raw materials regularly as well as for finding adequate markets for the finished products·       Market research and production monitoring by the organization

Training for Enhancing Livelihood Opportunities for the Women of Mahadalit Communities

Dalits were historically marginalised and discriminated against. Although the theory of the untouchables has been long abolished, they remain the most impoverished and disadvantaged community in India. They have limited sources of income with a daily wage as low as Rs. 50, and health and sanitation remains a crucial problem. Only a small section has access to clean drinking water and over 64% of the households live without bathroom facilities. 
 Through our hygiene and sanitation project, we teach Musahars and Dalits of various villages of Arwal, Bihar, about the importance of clean water and sanitation.We focus on correctly showing villagers how to be sanitary and encourage every family in the region to have separate low-cost latrines.
