“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. Sharanaksh (Sharanam + Raksha) is an Animal Welfare Organisation. Community Streeties India, an initiative of Sharanaksh, is an animal shelter in operation since August 2018. CSI has been rescuing and rehabilitating sick, abused, injured and abandoned dogs and puppies. We currently house 95+ dogs at the shelter. As individuals, team and as part of the organization we have been feeding 25000+ meals to street dogs every month since 2003. We also focus on critical impacts such as animal birth control and vaccinations for every dog that come to the shelter and the dogs we feed and rescue. We ensure these rescued animals have a safe future either at the shelter for the ones that cannot be released back onto the streets, by getting them adopted and/or by regular monitoring and follow ups of the dogs that have been released back.

Community Streeties India (CSI) an initiative of Sharanaksh, has been a safe and loving home to 100+ rescued dogs since 2018. It is now faced with few major issues:A debilitating infrastructure. Some of the challenges include:<ol><li>severe shortage of water supply;</li><li>water clogging</li><li>high frequency of power cuts;</li><li>lack of entry road access for our ambulance due to local ownership disputes and slushy mud roads making it difficult during rains.</li></ol>A notice from the landlord to move out in 60 days - 30 April 2023 which has now been extended till 30 August 2023 on request.These issues have prevented us from a smooth running of the shelter. It has become an unsafe place for both the dogs and staff to live in. Without support from regular volunteers and visibility the future looks very uncertain. We have received a project final cost estimated at 83 Lakhs and we have been able to raise 40 Lakhs from couple of individual funders. We are reaching out for support to cover the balance amount of 43 Lakhs. 
 We are building a new shelter at a better location (60 Dasarahalli Village, Kasaba Hobli, Devanahalli Taluk, Bangalore Rural District) with the goal of eventually becoming a self-sustaining Non-profit Organisation and scaling our impact by helping more dogs. It will have the following features:<ol><li>Bigger &amp; Cheaper Land - 1.15 acres of land available at a lower rent than our current space. It is approx 3 times larger than our current location and 50% cheaper.</li><li>Safe Shelter - No local disputes, utility constraints and a mindfully-designed space for our team and volunteers to work efficiently.</li><li>In-house Medical Facility - An intermediate set of infrastructure and staff for providing many of the common treatments in-house. </li></ol>Several other features including but not limited to ensuring an Accessible Location, setting up for an Animal Birth Control program for sterilization of dogs in and surrounding villages However, that's all it is for now - a Plan. The only missing piece to save them from homelessness and make this plan a reality are - the Funds. 
 All this will help us to<ol><li>Increase our capacity to prevent our existing rescued dogs from going homeless.</li><li>More than double our capacity to rescue and treat dogs in need.</li><li>Increase adoption rates through interactive spaces and services for potential pet parents.</li><li>Setup revenue generating activities to reduce reliance on inconsistent donations.</li><li>Build a bigger team with more volunteers.</li></ol>Conducting regular ARV vaccination drives in and around villages: “Over 90% of India’s reported human rabies cases are from rural areas, where people often do not have rapid access to vaccines or may rest on traditional and faith healers that are completely vain against this deadly virus.” Working on a project to make IG vaccinations for humansReduction in Human-Animal Conflicts with regular awareness programs and sterilization's: Almost every stray dog in both urban and rural Bengaluru are homeless facing daily adversities such as harsh weather, lack of food/water, no safe space to sleep, and are at least once a day inflicted with violent human behaviour. As they say, “Dogs don’t bite, ill-treatment does”We have rescued over 1000 dogs from these circumstances and currently have 100+ living safely with us at the shelter with no other place to go. They are not capable of surviving on their own, like - <ol><li>Benji - paralyzed waist-down;</li><li>Hazel - Head Injury &amp; Meningitis; </li><li>Ammu - Blind, and so many others. </li></ol>The shelter is their only safe space.

SHARANAKSH is a non-profit Trust dedicated to the rescue, care, rehabilitation, and re-homing of neglected/abused dogs. The word “Sharanaksh” has been derived from Sanskrit words Sharanam (meaning shelter) and Raksha (meaning to protect). This trust was established in Aug-2018 by a group of avid animal lovers led by Sai Geetha. The animal shelter is called “Community Streeties India (CSI)”. CSI is located in Devanahalli (Bangalore, India) near a village called Avathi.CSI welcomed their first batch of 8 rescue dogs in Apr-2019, and is now home to 95+ dogs (pups, young adults, and the elderly dogs who are happily living out their days at the shelter). Our family will undoubtedly increase in the future, while we aim to progress towards sustainable solutions.There’s a rise in stray dog population in both Urban and Rural Bangalore which may be due to weakening of the Animal Birth Control &amp; Vaccination program by the civic authorities and the growing unorganized human settlements contributing to un-segregated or untreated garbage that attract scavengers and strays.There is a public misconception that strays are harmful. These animals are often ill-treated, harmed and even culled There are illegal backyard- breeders not registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) who abandon the older dogs and pups that they do not see as profitable anymore. These add to the stray population and found in horrible conditions when rescued.The pandemic further led to many families either abandoning their pets, because of reasons like economic distress or relocation to different cities/towns, leading to an increase in the stray population and rescues.Apart from the known issues surrounding this field of animal welfare, the number of critical cases reported to CSI has increased greatly. The lack of space and infrastructure will only lead to us denying intake of animals after a certain point. Animals need our support and we need yours to help them.CRITICAL CHALLENGESThere have been critical challenges with the running of shelter lately such as shortage of water supply, frequency of power cuts, access roads getting damaged due to constant vehicle movement and rains, and no space for vehicles to park for vendors to drop off supplies (previously which was open space has now been blocked) which is making it difficult to continue at the current location. We plan to move to a new and better location which we have identified. The current facility is Half an acre and the new identified land is 1.5 acres.However, to continue saving and rescuing more stray dogs, CSI needs your help to achieve a goal amount of Rs. 40,00,000. With the funds collected, we intend to lease land for over 10-15 years, construction costs right from boundary wall, borewell to sheds for dogs and living space for workers, kennels, partitions and isolation units, UPS for continuous power supply and CCTVs for better monitoring and surveillance, and also tocover relocation costs. 
 With the funds raised, it will help us increase our capacity to rescue and save more animals in the rural area, support with more space and infrastructure for critical cases and expand our reach to other surrounding villages and help with sterilizations and vaccinations. The funds will help in hiring more people/increase manpower to manage the shelter operations and more outreach programs for awareness and adoptions. 
 Currently, the animals in rural areas are largely neglected, with the lack of infrastructure and facilities. Most villagers rely on large animals for their bread and butter, and hence reasonably taken care of; however the smaller street animals like dogs, cats etc. are left unattended to and neglected. Most are unsterilized and unvaccinated because no local body/Panchayat takes up the responsibility of the same, putting the life of the animals and humans at risk and increasing human-animal conflicts. By increasing our shelter capacity with not only infrastructure and manpower, but we also will be working with panchayat towards making a larger impact on the safety of not just animals but humans too and involving them in our endeavour for a better and more humane environment to live in.
