In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. Differently Abled

We are a registered Non-Governmental organization working for the welfare of the poor and needy. We started Sharanalayam in a small rented premise with 7 street and orphaned children in 2001. Today it is a loving home for 200 inmates including abandoned children of beggars, sex workers, HIV-infected, mentally retarded, and mentally ill. In order to continue with this charity work we are fully dependent on public donations. It is with great difficulty that we have been able to feed so many needy souls, provide them with medical care, clothing, and shelter and above all more than 50 children are today proudly carrying their bags to school. Sharanalayam - Jothi is functioning with more than 80 abandoned mentally ill and mentally retarded children and adults who are wandering in the streets and we are giving them shelter, food, medical care etc. The present building is not enough for these less fortunate people who are increasing in number day by day.

And of course, we've taken stringent care of their health, taking the appropriate medical action as and when required. With the help of our dear donors, we've provided vocational training to 35 women with mental disabilities, so they can live a life of dignity. Sharanalayam took on her case and provided intensive psychiatric treatment and counseling, after which she began to show gradual improvement.  Sharanalayam ensured her college education was put to use and arranged tuitions so she can live life with dignity and a degree of independence. Many underprivileged children living in slums or with parents who are beggars or sex workers don’t get the opportunity for proper shelter, education or food. Abandoned and neglected children by society end up becoming sex workers, beggars or anti-socials without having proper guidance or education. 
 Sharanalayam is a not-for-profit charitable organization that provides shelter, food, education, health and hygiene to children of Sex workers, HIV-infected and affected children, orphans, beggar children, etc. Sharanalyam is a loving and caring home to these children. It was started in the year 2000 by Mrs Vanitha Rengaraj who is lovingly called Thaiamma and most of the children here hold her name as an initial.  
 Sharanalayam is a loving home for children who are abandoned by society. Sharanalayam currently houses 200 residents on campus. All the children are going to school. Sharanalayam has created many engineers, Nurses, Lab technicians, Chefs, etc. All the children eventually become productive citizens. These children have a home to come back to called Sharanalayam.
