“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. The latest data* released by Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) in 2020-21 reveals that although at primary level, the dropout rate in 2020-21 was only 0.8 per cent, but at secondary level (Class 9-10), it was 14.6 per cent, which is seriously alarming. Government agencies, nonprofits and other civil society groups do engage with children and their families for better turnout at schools but the overall picture hasn’t changed much since decades.The education of girl children in India is still a grave issue. Where many girls are still deprived of education and are made to leave their studies one such sector belongs to the marginalised section of society (slums, rural). This economically weaker section cannot avail of education for their children due to lack of funds, such issues have deepened post-COVID-19 where many families were affected and took a hit on their livelihood. Children are not even availed of basic sanitary requirements resulting in poor health. The slums in Lucknow and other working areas of SES i.e. Balrampur and Siddharth Nagar are ever-growing with many children belonging to low-income families and lacking basic rights. The children in these areas are susceptible to several health hazards and lack basic education resulting in their poor development. The girls in these slums are expected to work rather than get basic education to make the ends meet.  UDAAN is an initiative by Shohratgarh Environmental Society (SES) to ensure girl children in marginalised and vulnerable communities have access to their basic fundamental rights especially education, healthcare and protection. The initiative is aimed at creating an enabling environment for children so they may enjoy a childhood all children deserve. We work with communities to ensure enrolment of out-of-school children and strive to sensitise school management committees and local administration on the need to promote child rights proactively. We help to ensure children have access to nutrition and health services. We also work with children to build their life skills and orient them on rights and entitlements. 
 As a large chunk of the young generation contribute to the population of India and their inability to attend regular school will undeniably have implications on societal growth and prosperity of India as well. Shohratgarh Environmental Society (SES) has decided to connect these dropout girls (between 11-19 years) with regular school education back again so there is no obstacle in their learning process. Stories of young girls highlighted in our fundraising campaign have been collected from grassroots level who had to drop out from their schools due to family’s poor economic conditions. The campaign will pay school tuition for these girls for one full year to let them study without any interruption . This fundraising campaign intends to promote the spirit to education and inspire others to support the cause of girl child education . <ul><li>SES will identify girls who have dropped out of regular schooling due to economic conditions and sensitisation of communities on related health issues.</li><li>Will engage with their families and stakeholders motivating them to send their girls to schools.</li><li>The funds received will be used to deposit their fee, buy learning material, school dress and other items. </li><li>Concise reports of these developments shall be shared on this platform to ensure better transparency and trust of donors.</li></ul>

In India, as of 12th August 2020, 6,43,948  active cases of COVID-19 have been reported by the Ministry of Health . In order to reduce the community transmission, the Indian Government responded with a stringent nation-wide lock-down on 25th March 2020, extended till 31st May 2020. This unprecedented lockdown situation created a public health, but also a social and economic emergency .It causes disruption and suffering to many families and individuals in rural and urban areas. The most impacted are the people working in the informal or unorganized sector - e.g. daily wage labourers, small-scale farmers, farm labourers, tribal people, dalits, religious minorities but also people living with disabilities and the women and children from these communities Consequently, India has witnessed a huge wave of reverse migration of these people from the urban to the rural areas back home, not only increasing the chance of spreading the virus but also with a huge uncertainty of livelihood that could feed themselves and their families. Women and girls are also now at greater risk of domestic violence as reported in the UN Women’ study (April 2020) stating that violence against women and girls (VAWGs) has intensified due to home lockdown . 
 <ul><li>Provision of minimum relief items: Provision of basic needs for most vulnerable groups (e.g. essential food, or nutrition assistance to food insecure and malnourished groups including children) as well as hygiene supplies including personal protective kits.</li><li>Capacity building for sustainable livelihood and community resilience: training, workshops, meetings, exchange-learning/visit, mentoring, and on-the-job training, skills development, use of technology, enterprise / social business promotion.</li><li>Strengthening of Public Distribution Supply (PDS) system including facilitating access to temporary PDS cards for the poor to access their entitlements and cover people who are not covered by any social security schemes.</li><li>Communication: promotion of risk communication campaign on practicing positive hygiene behaviors sensitive to cultural and religious beliefs. Raising awareness of non-judgmental/non-discrimination messages towards the infected cases to reduce unnecessary fears and social stigmatization in the community.</li><li>Addressing gender issues: including by strengthening capacities of individuals, communities, authorities to reduce domestic violence towards women and girls in the context of crisis.</li><li>Networking for sustainable social and economic recovery and resilience: support and strengthen national level CSO networks, promote and strengthen engagement with private sector and community groups exchanges, community-mobilization, and mechanism supporting networking (Information Technology and social-media platforms) etc.</li></ul> 
 <ul><li>Increasing community's engagement in addressing broader social and economic consequences of the crisis for poor and vulnerable populations; supporting and building capacities for sustainable livelihood (e.g. income generation and food security); linking with government economic/livelihood schemes; access to social security schemes; leverage technology and/or other emerging opportunities to strengthen the skills and livelihoods of the population.</li><li>Strengthening local resilience; supporting preparedness and self-sufficiency (both at individual- and community-level) and building capacities of vulnerable communities to prevent, withstand, and mitigate impacts of future health, economic and social crisis. Ensure positive behavioral change of individuals and community through capacity building, communication and awareness campaigns including working with the government.</li><li>Empowering community capacity in: rehabilitation; mobilizing relief support including basic essential supplies and developing communication and awareness campaigns. Relief response should however not be the main priority area of the action and should be considered only for extremely vulnerable and impacted population (on a case- by- case basis), as a first response measure, only if there is no other agency providing any help.</li></ul>

Enhancing Communities’ Livelihood Resilience  Capacities in Uttar Pradesh

<ul><li>India has taken early action to limit the spread of COVID-19, ordering a nationwide lockdown for its population of 1.3 billion people, extended till 17th may. The number of reported infections is low so far, with 49,391 cases and 1694 deaths as of may 6. However, as COVID-19 cases are increasing fast, there is great concern about the disease’s potential spread and impact. As COVID-19 advances, it has devastating effect. The public health crisis is aggravated by the social and economic aftermath: food insecurity, job losses, school closures, increased poverty.</li></ul> We have been engaged in the critical work of supplying food and other essential resources to needy. India is overwhelmed with movement of millions of migrant labourers who are now crossing state borders to reach their villages after announcement of country Lockdown due to COVID-19. It is tip of iceberg of a crisis. It will have severe impact on lives of vulnerable population. These effects are largely borne by vulnerable populations in rural and urban part of India. Unchecked, the pandemic could erode hard-earned development gains and threaten social stability. We need long term strategy, to address challenges faced by migrants such as food insecurity and job loss with better health infrastructure etc.  
 Outreach and Mobilization Campaign:  <ul><li>    Provide support to 1000 migrant laborers and their family, those who do not have food to eat.</li><li>    To strengthen existing institutions and communities to work together to fight Cpvid-19</li><li>    Smart corona warriors- a group of volunteer shall develop to disseminate positive stories among community. </li><li>  Promoting hygiene practices (Hand Wash, General health and hygiene, sanitation, social distancing and cough etiquette)</li></ul>Counseling and Psychological Support: We aim to directly connect with the beneficiaries to create a sense of security and also help in addressing their fears, anxiety etc. Trained counselors shall contact beneficiaries offline and online.Training oh health workers on Covid-19 in low resource setting: The virus may travel to the villages. Villages where there is low testing, less hospitals, and no ventilators. It can be disaster if we don’t see in long term. We propose training on Covid of primary health care workers in low resource setting and providing them personal protective equipments.Livelihood Interventions: Corona virus outbreak lead to a loss of livelihood that have lost their daily wage work due to lockdown. Programme will support 1000 families to begin livelihood with support of fund.  
 <ul><li>     Food and grocery support to 1000 families until they start alternative way of livelihood.</li><li>    Overcoming concerns faced by migrant workers relate to food, shelter and healthcare, fear of getting infected or spreading the infection, loss of wages, concerns about the family, anxiety and fear.</li><li> Strong community and institution to help voiceless marginalizes people. So that they recover from this loss and gradually they get rehabilitated after the normalcy of the economy. </li><li>1000 families are able to start alternative livelihood after losing job. They shall be engaged in agriculture, grass-roots level enterprises dealing with livestock and dairy etc. These families need to have a foothold in their own communities, which will strengthen the roots of the country and hence provide large-scale and long-term growth for all.</li><li>     Health care professionals shall be less vulnerable to infection .They will prevent panic in community and support those who are already sick .Enhanced skill of health workers on Covid-19 with required equipment. It will help to prevent and cases of Covid-19. </li></ul>
