For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. After undergoing years of medical treatment and therapy at Ashadeep, Preeti has seen substantial recovery. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. Sometimes, a few are abandoned by their families and forced to live a miserable life on the streets. These people, out of hunger, eat out of garbage dumps and live painful lives. The fate of women is even worse. Without a safe shelter, they are subjected to constant sexual abuse on the streets,” shares Dr Anjana while shedding light on the extreme difficulties faced by homeless mentally ill patients. They have been rescuing the homeless from the streets and giving them a safe home for decades now.A beacon of hope for mentally ill homeless"Our main objective is to provide the best treatment and psychiatric care to those we rescue so they can live active lives. We enable our residents to live a life of dignity through medication and different therapies. We also try to find the families of those patients who have lost their way home and reunite them with their loved ones. We provide free medical treatment to those affected by leprosy and work to restore their dignity through complete care. After treatment, we rehabilitate them within our colony, offering food, shelter, and economic support to help them rebuild their lives. Through these efforts, we aim to break the social stigma around leprosy and encourage inclusion.A key part of our rehabilitation is providing vocational training in various departments to help leprosy patients become self-sufficient. Our handloom unit gives them skill development opportunities and a platform to produce and sell high-quality textiles. They make a range of products, including bedsheets, towels, napkins, dusters, asanas, table mats, and other items. This initiative not only keeps traditional skills alive but also provides steady employment.Our goshala, managed by leprosy inmates, takes care of cows while also generating income through the sale of milk and ghee. We also run a community kitchen that provides free, nutritious meals to all residents, allowing them to get hot meals, reduce waste, and interact with each other to build a strong bond among themselves.The income earned from our handloom products and goshala is reinvested into the trust to improve the lives of those we serve, ensuring the sustainability and growth of our work.Education is an important part of our mission. We are committed to educating children of leprosy patients and underprivileged backgrounds. Our hostel facilities provide a safe and supportive environment, helping children grow academically and personally. there are separate hostels for boys and girls. Besides the hostel, we enroll these children in good schools in Vadodara, ensuring they get a quality education. After finishing school, we support their higher education, covering all expenses and helping them pursue their chosen fields. Many of these children have completed their education and are now living independent, successful lives, breaking free from hardship and social isolation.Shram Mandir is like a village of its own, where people from different backgrounds come together to support and uplift each other. It is a self-sufficient community where leprosy patients and other marginalized individuals find belonging and purpose.
